One opportunity a day keeps success coming your way.

Today's Opportunity

Films Wanted for Online Film Festival

Beneath the Earth is an online film festival that was created out of the idea that the Internet has given new power to influence what content gets consumed and who gets noticed. We've already seen it happen in music, where musicians are discovered through the followings they create online. And now we'd like to see it happen for film and use this new power to shine the light on the little guy who's created something beautiful but hasn't been able to cut through the red Hollywood tape.

Submission categories are:
  • Feature Film (over 60 minutes, all genres)
  • Narrative Short (under 60 minutes, all genres)
  • Documentary Short (under 60 minutes, all genres)
  • Animated Short (under 60 minutes, all genres)
  • Music Video (music video under 15 minutes, all genres)
  • Experimental Short (under 60 minutes, all genres)
Beneath the Earth accepts films produced in 1990 through 2012.

A Best Film and Audience Award is given out in each category. The Best Film is determined by Grand Jury vote while the Audience Award is determined by public vote.

The Grand Jury also determines a Best Film Overall Award winner across categories, who will receive a $1000 cash award. All winners, both Best Film and Audience Award winners, will receive the opportunity to have their film reviewed by the Grand Jury, which includes actress Gabourey Sidibe and Variety writer Marc Graser.

Learn more about submitting.

BACKSTAGE DRAMA RECEIVES EMMY MICHIGAN NOMINATION

Grand Rapids, MI -Fubble Entertainment, LLC founded by the award winning team of Teresa L. Thome and Patrick W. Ziegler announces an Emmy nomination for its first project, Backstage Drama, a web series benefiting community theatres. The series, distributed at www.backstagedrama.com, produced and co-directed by Thome & Ziegler, was created with the support of more than 145 volunteers in West Michigan and Chicago. It is filmed almost entirely at Grand Rapids Civic Theater.

The series has already received a national Telly Award and a regional Eclipse Award. "We are very pleased with the recognition for the project. The team worked tirelessly to produce the episodes and the nomination is a testament to their talent," Thome offers. While both Thome and Ziegler have Emmys for their work on the locally produced "Come On Over!" Ziegler states, "I have to admit there is something incredibly special about this nomination. The show is an idea that we created and have nurtured for more than three years. It's an incredible honor that a nominating committee of our peers finds value in our idea and our work", he adds.

The team is hopeful that the nomination will help in marketing efforts to continue to sell the series to interested audiences. The series is available for a purchase price of $9.99, from which 30% is contributed to the community or independent theater of the purchasers choosing. To date, more than $500 has been distributed to community theaters across the country.

The goal of fubble entertainment is to create a sustainable business that produces original content for the entertainment consumer that doesn't rely on the buy-in of Hollywood for its success. The model for providing the first property, the web series, is innovative and ground-breaking. As more and more people turn to the web for their viewing habits, Thome and Ziegler seek to capture a share of that market. The young company continues to seek investors in this project and other properties. The goal is to produce five more episodes in the near future.

Library News

Reduction in Library Hours Begins July 1st

While Library usage has steadily increased, tax revenues for the Library have decreased each year with a drop of more than $800,000 over the last five years. The Library has done everything possible to weather these cuts while still providing quality services and programming-with much help from the Friends of the Library, community partnerships, and the creativity of Library staff.

In spite of these efforts, these cuts have reached a critical point in the 2012-2013 budget year. Due to falling tax revenues and unavoidable budget constraints, we are unhappy to announce that beginning July 1, the Library will reduce staff, programming and operational hours.

The Library's new hours will be as follows:

Sunday-Monday: closed
Tuesday: 10am - 6pm
Wednesday-Thursday: 12pm - 9pm
Friday-Saturday: 10am - 5pm

There will be a library millage vote on August 7th, 2012.

For more information about these changes and the state of your Library, please visit westlandlibrary.org/budget.pdf or stop by and talk to us!
