Watch Morgan Freeman Reading The Definition of 'Twerk' via @mashables #LOL #funny #wotd

Voiceover king Morgan Freeman can make any word in the dictionary sound respectable

Case in point: After the word "twerk" was added to Oxford Dictionaries Online this week, the 76-year-old enthusiastically narrated its definition during Morning Express with Robin Meade.

The dictionary's official definition of twerk is: "Dance to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance."

Freeman managed to stay awake, unlike his appearance during a live TV interview in June

In addition to twerk, Oxford Dictionaries Online (not to be confused with the more official publication Oxford English Dictionary) also added popular new words such as selfie, digital detox, Bitcoin, BYOD, emoji, FOMO, geek chic, phablet, srsly and TL;DR Read more...

E-reader company Kobo unveiled a new lineup of Arc tablets, as well as its first digital-magazine store featuring content from major publishers, at an event Tuesday night in New York City.

The new collection of devices, which are scheduled to hit stores on Oct. 16, includes the Kobo Arc 10HD, two Kobo Arc 7 tablets running Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean) and the Kobo Aura with a 6-inch e-ink display

"Many may say [the] tablet industry is crowded, but until now, no one has developed tablet experience for readers first," a Kobo executive told attendees. "People who download apps on tablets don't read daily, and do so more like once a week. We talked to some of our best customers, and they said tablets are generally multi-purpose first and e-readers second." Read more...

If the reports are true, and J.D. Salinger's estate is set to release five never-before-seen novels by the famously reclusive author, the literary world may be set to receive its biggest posthumous bounty since Emily Dickinson's sister happened upon that trunk full of poems. As many have long suspected, Salinger may soon join the long, illustrious line of novelists' whose work continues to emerge long after they depart this world.

Here are 10 of the most remarkable posthumously published novels in history:

A Death in the Family

By James Agee

An autobiographical novel aimed at understanding his own father's death, the ironically titled A Death in the Family was seven years in the making but still incomplete when James Agee died in 1955. Two years later, it was published to alleviate the financial strain Agee's family faced—and then went on to win the 1958 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Read more...

Why Hearst Fired 'Cosmo' and 'Elle' Web Editors via @mashables

Hearst on Tuesday laid off two highly placed web editors at its magazines: Abby Gardner, the digital director of Cosmopolitan, and Amina Akhtar, the editor of Elle.com. Both layoffs came as a surprise to industry observers and to the individuals themselves.

Then, that afternoon, the publisher announced three new hires, two of whom would be replacing in mid-September the editors who were just let go.

The timing was odd: Why fire two top editors just two weeks before New York Fashion Week, one of the most demanding coverage periods of the year? What were the existing editors both failing to deliver on? And, how does this affect the publications' digital strategies? Read more...

PRESS RELEASE: The Motown Writers’ Network brings the community together! Aug 10th

The Motown Writers’ Network brings the community together!
Monthly Meet Up for writers focuses on the community.

DETROIT – On August 10, 2013 the Motown Writers’ Network (MWN), which holds a monthly Meet Up for Detroit area authors and writers shifts its focus in August to bring awareness to community activities, and raise funds and register people for the MWN November conference.
At the Meet and Greet, representatives from Detroit area non-profits organizations, libraries and authors will speak about their projects and activities and network with the literary community. Those with events for the community to attend will also have the opportunity to speak with leaders in the literary community, meet local authors and share event fliers and materials with attendees.

“In August, we dedicate our monthly writers’ discussion at Barnes and Noble Bookstore to readers, writers and the community,” says Sylvia Hubbard, founder and president of the Motown Writers’ Network and Michigan Literary Network.  “We want to increase awareness of the needs in Metro Detroit and the Meet Up kicks off our conference season leading up to our annual Essence of Motown Literary Jam and Conference in November.”

Hubbard, who often pays for the annual conference largely out of her own purse, asks August Meet and Greet attendees to donate towards the conference. “We are hoping this year to make our writer’s portion of the conference free through grants, but we still need location fees, lunch sponsorships, and other fees.

So we use the Meet and Greet as our initial fundraiser.”

The Literary Meet and Greet includes networking, giving opportunities to strengthen the Metro Detroit literary community, theatrical performances and the chance to win books and reading devices!

The Motown Writers’ Network’s Literary Meet and Greet is 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, August 10, 2013 at Barnes and Noble Bookstore on Wayne State University’s Campus, 82 W. Warren in Detroit. For more information and to register visit http://motownmeetgreet13.eventbrite.com/ or call (313) 289-8614.
