2012 KRESGE EMINENT ARTIST

NAOMI LONG MADGETT

Award-winning poet, editor, and educator Naomi Long Madgett - who nurtured aspiring Detroit poets through her teaching, annual poetry award, and publishing company - has been named the 2012 Kresge Eminent Artist.

The Kresge Eminent Artist Award and $50,000 prize recognize Madgett's decades of commitment to originating, illuminating, and preserving poetry by African-Americans, and promoting the study and appreciation of African-American literature in schools and universities. A professor emeritus of English at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Mich., Madgett is the author of 10 books of poetry, a pair of textbooks, and the 2006 memoir, "Pilgrim Journey." She also has edited two anthologies.

Madgett's poems have appeared in scores of anthologies at home and abroad. Her work has been recognized with an American Book Award, the Michigan Governor's Award for Arts & Culture, three honorary degrees, several lifetime-achievement awards, and induction into three halls of fame. Lotus Press, which Madgett founded in 1972, has published more than 90 collections of poetry written by emerging and established poets.

Madgett's selection as the 2012 Kresge Eminent Artist also honors her commitment to the city that she has enlivened for more than six decades.

Objects in motion will remain in motion unless

acted upon by an outside force. Objects

at rest will remain at rest unless acted upon

by an outside force. Matthew Olzmann

is an object at rest, and will remain at rest,

reclining on the couch while drinking Guinness

and watching football. Or, he is an object at rest,

and will remain at rest, sprawled over the couch

while drinking Guinness and watching hockey.

Or, he could be merely napping on the couch,

having already finished a Guinness,

and though the TV is on, he's not watching,

because it's three in the afternoon and there's nothing

to watch. Where does Matthew Olzmann go

when he shuts his lovely eyes and dreams

his lovely dreams about drinking Guinness

while hunting saber-toothed tigers? Obviously,

he goes nowhere. Let me say this again. The man

is an object at rest, a legendary object at rest,

and will remain at rest unless acted upon

by his wife, who comes home shortly

and will remind him to take out the garbage

or go to the grocery store. Matthew Olzmann

would have performed these duties by now,

but it's hard to rise from this couch,

impossible actually, if one believes in physics.

Fewer Applications Are Being Sent To Michigan's Film Office 9 & 10 News

Related to why the state is receiving fewer applications? WMFO has been getting calls and letters.

As you know, the new structure of the Film Production and Digital Media Assistance Program includes a change in the way the application filing fees are collected and paid. Instead of getting taken out of the awarded incentives that are paid out on the back-end with a tax rebate, now the fee is to be submitted up front, can be quite large (no longer only $100), and it is apparently non-refundable? Even if the project is not approved?

Reading over the law, I can only see where it states that an applicant's filing fee will be "deposited into the MFO fund." This, it would seem to me, means that the issue of a refundable filing fee (or a portion thereof) could be open to interpretation by the MFO and the MEDC/Dept of Treasury?

Or is this language meant to imply that all fees will be kept by the MFO no matter what?

Today I learned that one of the most promising projects in our pipeline- 3D conversions from FOX- is now on the fence about applying for MI incentives because of this filing fee issue. We even offered to cover the fee for them, but they said that the administrative accounting involved in such a reimbursement from us would be very problematic, and made the whole process very unappealing to them. There may be ways around this, nevertheless, our happy news about a way to help them meet their visual effects budget by using our Michigan facility, has been soured right out of the gate.

Please let us know if this issue is being addressed, and how soon it might be cleared up. Our ability to benefit (and hire more artists) via the new incentives program appears to be hanging in the balance.

Thriller Chiller

Thriller! Chiller! Film Festival welcomes the 2012 film festival season with a special screening of "Night of the Living Dead," Saturday, February 4th at the Wealthy Theatre. Doors open at 3 p.m. and the show starts at 4 p.m. Tickets are $5 at the door with all proceeds benefitting the Wealthy Theatre Centennial Sustainability Campaign.

Celebrating George Romero's birthday and the zombie movie that made him famous is part of the viral event known as "1,000,000 People Watching 'Night of the Living Dead' for George's Birthday."

"Thriller! Chiller! traditionally screens Night of the Living Dead as a free community event during our festival in October," explains festival director, Chris Randall. "It's always a lot of fun and it's a great way to start off our festival this year with a fundraising benefit for the Wealthy Theatre Centennial Sustainability Campaign."

Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the inspiration to write Smoke Screen?

Monique D. Mensah: Smoke Screen is a sequel of my first novel, Who Is He To You. It takes place ten years later, after the tragedy that pulled my characters together in the past. When I wrote Who Is He To You, I actually had no intention of writing a sequel. I like complete stories, and I felt a sense of finality when I finished my debut. However, my readers thought otherwise.

They wanted more of those characters. Specifically, they wanted to know what happened to the sympathetic main character, 14-year-old Simone. I, on the other hand, only resolved to writing a sequel when I was able to come up with a story that could stand on its own and have an original story line, independent of the fist novel.

So after putting some thought into it, I came up with the plot to Smoke Screen. If it had not been for my readers insistence, it would never have been written; so I have to say that my readers were my inspiration.

JP: What sets Smoke Screen apart from other books in the same genre?

MDM: I think that a lot of people have a fixed perception or expectation of African-American literature. A lot of that is due to what the major publishers are willing to put on the book shelves. Being self-published gives me the freedom to write whatever I want, without worrying about what the majors want, or what's considered "hot" right now.

I don't focus on the genre. I focus on the story, and then name the genre after it's complete. With Smoke Screen and my other two novels, I offer something refreshing for readers, that proves that black authors can defy those perceptions and expectations.

I write intelligent novels, that make you think and sometimes self-evaluate. I tell a good story, that leaves you wondering "just what genre does that book fit into?" and then later claiming not to care about the genre, because a good book is just that–a good book.

JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that led to Smoke Screen getting out to the public?

MDM: I attribute my success to my dedication to making myself as visible as possible through the limited resources that I had. I'm self-published, so everything was on my dime, which can be rather expensive, but I made sure that I set aside a budget for marketing.

I took out ads with different sites that support black literature. I also entered contests, and national novel competitions. I posted on blog sites, and I made myself very accessible through social media outlets. I make sure to interact with my readers and potential readers; so they know that I appreciate their support.

This is my third novel, so my readers helped a lot in getting the word out, by telling their friends, fellow readers, and everyone in their networks. Word-of-mouth has been my most powerful marketing tool.

JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take you to start and finish Smoke Screen?

MDM: I don't really have a standard writing process. Some factors stay the same for each book that I write, and some change, depending on the plot. When thinking of the plot, I always come up with the ending first. I have a clear idea of where I want the story to go; so in writing the novel from the beginning, I'm just trying to justify the ending.

After writing a few chapters (maybe four or five) freestyle, I start to get a clearer picture of the intricacies of the plot, sub-plots, and characters; so I begin a chapter outline, just jotting down major occurrences for the next few chapters. I write those chapters and outline the next few, until I get to the end.

I don't have a writing schedule (although I probably should). I pretty much just write when I feel like it. I do have a goal of putting out a new book every summer, so I try to meet that deadline, and so far I have been successful. I procrastinate a lot, and sometimes I just don't feel like writing, so I don't. For that reason, it took me about eight months to complete Smoke Screen. Had I practiced more discipline, I could have written it in three months. It's something I'm working on.

JP: What's next for Monique D. Mensah?

MDM: I am working on my fourth novel, NEMESIS, now, and I'm almost done with the first draft. As I mentioned, my goal is to have it out by this summer. It's a little different from my first three, but I think it will be one that will show my growth as a writer. It will be the fourth installment in my series, the Malignant Mind Series. I have two more books to add to that series, and I'll begin working on them immediately after NEMESIS is published. I'm also working on a novel with Brian W. Smith called PILLOW TALK, which will be released some time later this year as well. So look out for those two projects.

I'm living a dream that I've had since I was eight years old, and it's the best feeling I've ever had. I plan to write until I can't write anymore; so expect me to be around for a long time, because I have plenty more tricks up my sleeve.

Jazz & Black History @ the Southfield Public Library

In celebration of Black History Month, the Library will present a program, "A Great Day in Harlem" on Thursday, Feb. 9^th at 7 p.m. in the Meeting Room.

On August 12, 1958, at the request of Esquire magazine, 58 jazz musicians gathered in Harlem to be photographed. This picture subsequently became the most noted and famous jazz photograph of all time.

Stu Johnson, a member of the Michigan Jazz Record Collectors, will present a back story of the photograph and a musical program highlighting several of the musicians present on that eventful day. Mr. Johnson will have an informative handout that includes short biographies of the featured artists.

If you enjoy jazz, this listening and learning session should not be missed.

In this week's Spotlight we feature "What to Do When Life Hands You A Devastating Diagnosis" byL. J. Holloway. Life as I knew it was interrupted abruptly by my Devastating Diagnosis. Albeit brief, in the scheme of life- I was forced to consider my mortality after reading the words "premature death." Things that once seemed important were no longer important as I sought refuge in the Love of family and friends. Life quickly offered distinctions between Life before Diagnosis and Life after Diagnosis. Before my diagnosis I was in high demand and had an unending list of "Things to Do." After coming to terms with my diagnosis (after surgery), I am forced to deal with my need to be in control and schedule my life according to what I am able to DO.

The Spotlight Author

L. J. Holloway is a thirty-something believer, who now has three Birthdays--the date of her birth, the date of her diagnosis and the date of her first surgery (also the day this book was born). Consistent with the three's in her life, L.J. is a native and resident of Jacksonville, Florida who plays on Amelia Island at historic American Beach and works in the Nation's Capital (Washington, D.C.). She is also the founder of All About HealthCare Advocates, an advocacy firm "where all they CARE about is health." An avid supporter of education, Ms. Holloway hosts an Annual Benefit in support of students with potential who matriculate at HBCU's. L.J. Holloway earned the Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Florida College of Law and in her spare time enjoys fine dining, international travel and spending time with mature adults who impart wisdom. We are honored to welcome Naomi Benaron, winner of the 2011 Bellwether Prize for Fiction, an award established by Barbara Kingsolver to honor fiction that addresses issues of social justice.

Running the Rift follows Jean Patrick Nkuba, a gifted Rwandan boy, from the day he knows that running will be his life to the moment he must run to save his life, a ten-year span in which his country is undone by the Hutu-Tutsi tensions. The Andreas family is one of readers. Their father, a renowned Shakespeare professor who speaks almost entirely in verse, has named his three daughters after famous Shakespearean women. When the sisters return to their childhood home, ostensibly to care for their ailing mother, but really to lick their wounds and bury their secrets, they are horrified to find the others there. According to recent statistics, the literacy level in Detroit hovers around 50 percent. This sobering statistic is often linked to unemployment, low self-esteem and lower earnings. But there are organizations like Reading Works that are working to make a difference. That's why I founded my first event.

On Sunday, January 15, seven Detroit-based (yet national and international in scope) artists converged on the Virgil H. Carr Cultural Arts Center to raise support for Reading Works during Free Verse: Poetry + Music Celebrating the Life + Legacy of Dr. Martin King, Jr. Over 150 audience members enjoyed performances by: Detroit's Poet Laureate Naomi Long Madgett, Poet, Publisher and Founder of Black Women Rock! jessica Care moore, Poet/Activist/Journalist/Author Khary Kimani Turner, Rapper/Poet Mahogany Jones, Singer/Songwriter Tim Clark, Slam Poet Jeff Nelson and Musician Audrey Mabins. News From Donna Hill

Hello My Reading Family,

Happy holidays!! I know all of you are getting ready to get together with family and friends to share the joy of this holiday season. Many of us have had a very difficult year. If tough times have not hit you directly, I'm sure it has for someone that you know. So in this time of sharing be sure to remember those who have less, be thankful for all that you have and rejoice in your family and real friends.

I want to thank each and everyone of you who put your pennies together and enjoyed some of the books that I've written this year. I truly appreciate you and promise to keep them coming in 2012.

By the time I touch base with you all again, I will have participated in my graduation and will have my MFA. I feel truly blessed. It has been a grueling two years, but worth all the sweat and tears. In my next issue, I will be sure to include some grad pictures!!

I am thankful for so very much, and most of all my incredible family who make all that I struggle for worthwhile. And I cannot say enough about my friends who have stood by me through thick and thin! I love ya'll. For real!!

In the meantime, please enjoy this last edition of my newsletter for 2011. This issue features a fabulous author and savvy internet maven Sylvia Hubbard. She is truly amazing. I have two books coming out that will hit stores..... any minute now--Long Distance Lover and If I Could. Both of these are re-issues. So if you did not read them the first time around this is your chance. And if you did, please, please tell a friend. (remember a book is the perfect gift).

My book choice this month is When She Woke--a ingenious twist on the story of the Scarlet Letter. And last but not least, check out my daughter Dawne!!! A star. Keep her in your prayers as she makes her music move in 2012.

Yesterday, I read J.A. Konrath's post about the value of publicity and spent the rest of the day thinking about it. The article posed a lot of questions about how the relationship between publicity and book sales. This led me to ask myself - is book promotion a waste of time?

New authors like myself tend to spend a lot of time promoting our work on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Kindleboards, etc. I probably spend between six to eight hours a week on those sites and I'll bet that's the low end for many authors. Has all that promoting and community participation sold me many books? It's hard to say but I don't think it has. I'm guessing that the number is in the low double figures and that's a poor return for a full year of promotion.

Based on that, you'd imagine that my kindle book High Road to Tibet - Travels in China, Tibet, Nepal and India is struggling badly in the vastness of the Amazon. Far from it in fact. "High Road to Tibet" has held a steady spot in the Top#5 best sellers list for Asia Travel on Amazon.co.uk and Top#10 on Amazon.com for categories such as China and Tibet. So how are readers finding my book?

1/19/12—The Friends of the Monteith Library are proud to announce that the Monteith Branch Library will re-open on Monday, February 20, 2012. The Friends will hold a press conference to make the announcement on:

"The re-opening of this much needed resource was truly the collective energy of the community," said Friends spokesperson Valerie Glenn. "All library users - young and old, local and state wide elected officials, business owners, community, philanthropic, ecumenical and all other community members—will benefit. The people who reside in this immediate community spoke the loudest and quite articulately addressed the need for their jewel to re-open. The Friends of Monteith truly thank all for the hard work and efforts without which this victory would not have occurred."

She continued, "After numerous meetings and collaborations with the Detroit Public Library Commissioners and the Administration, this move to keep the library open ignited an agreed upon need to look at a new way to deliver city-wide library services. The re-opening of Monteith will allow the Detroit Public Library Commissioners an in-depth opportunity to evaluate the Library's present city-wide service delivery model and recreate a process that leaves no person left behind. Today's technological and complex society requires more information – not less."

The Friends of the Monteith Library is establishing a library task force that will evaluate the Detroit Public Library's existing service delivery model, analyze and evaluate the community needs for each library and recommend a library delivery model that will meet the needs of all of its users.

"With the recommendation and acceptance of this plan, The Friends of the Monteith Library and this special committee is hopeful that all of the four closed branches will be re-opened and there will be no recommended library closures without the involvement of the community," Glenn concluded.
