Everything about fifteen-year-old Cat’s new town in rural Michigan is lonely and off-kilter, until she meets her neighbor, the manic, beautiful, pill-popping Marlena. Cat, inexperienced and desperate for connection, is quickly lured into Marlena’s orbit by little more than an arched eyebrow and a shake of white-blond hair. As the two girls turn the untamed landscape of their desolate small town into a kind of playground, Cat catalogues a litany of firsts―first drink, first cigarette, first kiss―while Marlena’s habits harden and calcify. Reading and Q&A with Julie Buntin, author of Marlena

Tuesday, July 18th at 6:30pm.

We were wowed by debut novelist Julie Buntin's book Marlena.  Julie captures the setting of wintery northern Michigan and the tenuous friendship of teenage girls perfectly.  If you are a fan of Nickolas Butler (and really, who out there in Saturn-land isn't?) and Travis Mulhauser, you'll want to read this book and welcome Julie to the store.  Get your tickets soon.

Aug3rd: @ RustCityBookCon Author/Reader Event #Michigan #michlit #Motownwriters

DESCRIPTION

Rust City Book Con is a super casual intimate convention and book signing in Troy, MI, with the intent to introduce readers to new authors and genres, as well as the chance to interact with current favorites. We have a fabulous lineup of authors, ranging from indie to NYT Bestsellers, that will be sure to tempt readers of all walks of life.
We'll be focusing on all GENRE fiction, so there's bound to be some interesting and diverse topics discussed at the daily panels. In the evenings we'll be partying and creating some fascinating mayhem with meet & greets, or as I like to call them, mini-parties.
While there is a schedule, there is also time for authors and readers to simply hang out. It's all but guaranteed that readers will have plenty of one-on-one interactions with the attending authors.
Saturday’s book sale and signing is open to convention attendees, and also FREE to the public. However we are asking everyone to bring a gently used book (childrens through adult) to help fill a new #LittleFreeLibrary to be installed within the community after the event. The library will be revealed/displayed throughout the weekend.
I know many readers tend to stick with their preferred genres, and there's nothing wrong with that; but you never know what you'll find, what you'll like, until you take a leap of faith. Join us August 4-6, 2017 and discover the authors who write the stories we love to read!
Can't wait for the festivities? Join the FB group where we keep the party going!

Literati is pleased to welcome Ryan White in support of his new book, Jimmy Buffett: A Good Life All the Way.

In Jimmy Buffett: A Good Life All the Way, acclaimed music critic Ryan White has crafted the first definitive account of Buffett’s rise from singing songs for beer to his emergence as a tropical icon and CEO behind the Margaritaville industrial complex, a vast network of merchandise, chain restaurants, resorts, and lifestyle products all inspired by his sunny but disillusioned hit “Margaritaville.”

#RustCity17 Newsletter - June 22, 2017 via @rustbookcon

#RustCity17 is only 6 weeks away!

Sylvia Hubbard, have you registered yet? We have a fabulous lineup of authors joining us and the schedule will be posted soon. I've made a few changes and added some new activities that will guarantee a whole new experience from last year.

The MEET & GREETS are going to be staggered this year, so instead of having to choose which one to go to, attendees will be able to go to ALL of them.

Added to the schedule this year are GAME SESSIONS. Basically, all this will be is a room full of games. Anyone can go in, grab one of the games, and play with anyone in there. There is no structure to this room - it's just another place for readers to get some one-on-one time with any of our attending authors, or getting some much needed down time, without being in the bar or at a panel. Some of the games available will be Cards Against Humanity, One Night Ultimate Werewolf & VampireDraw What (except for when that one is scheduled), ElementosExploding KittensDoctor Who Clue (because I really want a reason to buy it *grin*), King of TokyoUno Dare, and anything else I get between now and then that looks fun. And yes, I have a few games I'm thinking of getting - Battle MonkeysBang! The Walking DeadBatman Almost Got ImBoss Monster, and a bunch of others.

New this year...I've decided to mimic a feature of the local SF/F cons with a Rust City ConSuite!  If you're unfamiliar with the ConSuite setup, the basic idea is free food. It's simple, easy to prepare food & snacks, but it's available at every meal. There will be sandwich makings - meat, cheese, condiments, etc - and I'm going to try and do hot dogs as well. This way Rust City is able to offer all the meals, and people can drop in, grab something and go if they need to.
Register For #RustCity17 Here!
#RustCity17 author Stacy McKitrick begins the "Anything Goes" #FlashFiction over at Alpha Heroes Book Blog with ON THE HUNT.

"Anything Goes" means authors are welcome to bring in any kind of element they wish to this category, from time travel to zombies.
Shelf Addiction initiates #RustCity17 author, Jillian David in her very first podcast. Listen in as Tamara talks with Jillian about her Hell's Valley series, Rust City, and more!

Get a glimpse into David's Hell's Valley series with an excerpt from the first novel, LEGACY LOST.
The FREE Public book signing will beSaturday, August 5, 2017 - 2:00pm to 4:00pm.

Just like last year, we are asking everyone to bring a gently used book (childrens through adult) to help fill a new #LittleFreeLibrary to be installed within the community after the event. The library will be revealed/displayed throughout the weekend.

That's all I have for you for now. I hope to see you at #RustCity17!

#MotownWriters: The Art of Juggling by #MichLit Author @SylviaJordan

There is a lot of talk these days about work-life balance, and no wonder.  Cultural and technological shifts – not to mention economic need – has us running around like proverbial hamsters on the wheel.

Humanity seems more stressed than ever before, and the marketplace has responded with a plethora of books, lectures and modalities on how we can balance our obligations with fun in order to maintain our mental, physical and spiritual well-being.

Dr. Sylvia Jordan’s The Art of Juggling: The Successful Women’s Guide to Balancing Life is a refreshing, no-holds-barred take on life balance.  She does not rely on the popular lingo of the day, but uses plain language – and a healthy dose of tough love – to demonstrate how we can lead very full but efficient, purposeful and joyous lives.

What sets Jordan apart from other experts is her willingness to tell the unvarnished the truth – juggling takes mental discipline, not only when our pins are in the air, but when we are choosing those pins. It begins with an honest assessment of our lives as they currently are.

Do we lack the time to go back to school, volunteer at a charity or fulfill some other goal we have? While this many seem to be the case, an examination of our routine will likely reveal that a portion of each day is spent on burdens that are not ours to carry.

Chock full of practical advice and a-ha! moments, The Art of Juggling encourages us to get clear on what matters most. Becoming an expert juggler is not about that “superwoman” label often bandied about, but about understanding that we have the capability and the right to achieve and maintain everything life has to offer.

What I found most compelling with Jordan’s telling of her own mother’s story. What greater juggling act can there be than raising nine children?

Her book is a must-read!  Get the book on Amazon or at www.SylviaJordan.com
