Books come to life at the Macomb Center

Karren Reish

Please see below for a great program for students from PreK - 12 at the Macomb Center. Their events are curriculum linked and you can arrange field trips as well as encourage to attend individually if appropriate.

______________________________

The Macomb Center's Page to Stage series brings a new slate of books to life on the Macomb Center's stage each season. These world-class productions starring professional actors bring characters from history and literature to the stage―giving voice to words and inspiring young people to find their own voice.

The experience of coming to see a show is never meant to replace reading the book, rather to complement and encourage reading. Each of the shows has a study guide to accompany the show, and the lessons and activities can be done in a classroom or family setting.  Shows range in target grade level from PreK – 12. Tickets are just $5 for students, and teachers are free with a group of 20 or more.

A full brochure is attached, and information is also on the Macomb Center website. Please call Meghan with any questions, or for tickets call 586.286.2021 to be connected to a group sales specialist.

Early Literacy Instruction: 10 Research-Informed Practices That Can Change Every Classroom

Content provided by BloomBoard.

This webinar takes place on September 26, 2016 @ 2 p.m. ET

Register for this webinar now.

As in many states, far too many of Michigan's children are not reading proficiently by the end of grade three—and the situation continues to worsen. Addressing this problem can require broad and significant improvement in instructional practices. Toward that end, an Early Literacy Task Force (ELTF) in Michigan identified 10 research-informed classroom literacy instructional practices for Pre-K and 10 such practices for K-3 that can have a meaningful impact on student literacy.

In this presentation, Nell Duke, Susan Townsend, and Naomi Norman will share these instructional practices, and discuss how the ELTF is working to make them a focus of professional development throughout the state of Michigan. These practices can be used by educators nationwide to make similar changes in their states.

Presenters:

Nell K. Duke, professor, literacy, language, and culture, University of Michigan

Naomi Norman, assistant superintendent, achievement & student services, Washtenaw Intermediate School District, Mich.

Susan Townsend, director of instruction and learning services, Jackson County Intermediate School District, Mich.

Moderator:

Kelly Montes De Oca, chief learning officer, BloomBoard

New post on Detroit: Little Library Capital of the WORLD!

Little Library Prize Winners

by Kim

Once upon a time, there were 25 Detroit artists who used their canvas to explore social, political and cultural issues, showing people what they may not see in Detroit.

These artists helped us promote reading and community by putting their work on 25 Little Free Libraries destined for Detroit community gardens and urban farms. The unique exhibition was also known as the inaugural Little Library Prize – an art show based on the model of ArtPrize, but with a social mission.

Congratulations to all 25 Detroit artists who participated in the show, displayed at the Fifth Third Bank Michigan State Fair over Labor Day weekend 2016.

In our minds, all are winners for using their talents to help promote a mission of reading in Detroit through the Little Free Library. We are grateful for their time but the true winners will soon be the children of Detroit.

But there were some cash prizes at stake. And the winners are...

1- Jelly Estrada, with 767 votes, "Once Upon A Time"

Tie 2 & 3-- Pete Coe, with 296 likes, "Monster Farm"
Gabrielle Gorges, with 296 likes, "Vibrant Life"

4- Niagara Detroit- 248 likes, for "Can I Help it if I Love to Read?"

5- Eric Millikin -216 likes for "The Butterfly Effect: Endangered Reading."

Re: [DetWrtrsGalore] #MotownWriters Monthly @Meetup w/Kevin Wayne Johnson Inspiring Us To Tell our Stories @Writing4theLord Oct8th RSVP #Detroit

Promotions, marketing, and sales have different, yet interconnected goals. Yet many lump them into a single category. All three are necessary to generate sales that make a company profitable. Promotions identifies the need or creates the desire . Marketing shows why this particular product solves the problem or satisfies the want. Sales closes the deal by asking for the purchase and giving the details of how to buy the product or service.

Please share to help your friends find the answer to the promotional challenges.

Combining two concepts, Never Can sayGood-bye creates an innovative spin on the ghostly genre. With a tagline, "When love is forever, death is only the beginning," it is comparable to Ghost and The Others.

Imprisoned in her family's home, the spirit of a murdered child waits for her parents to free her. But they have moved on to new lives as has her killer. Randi must bring them back together, so that they can forgive themselves and make amends. If she succeeds, they will all heal and she will be freed to also reincarnate. If she fails, their need for revenge will damn them all.
