New message from your USA :: Michigan :: Detroit Municipal Liaison, Majestic Potoo

Hello, Friends!

There's a chill in the air, the sun is setting early, and the sky may be a brilliant blue or leaden grey, depending on the minute. That's right, it's October, and whether you're a planner freaking out now, or a pantser getting ready to freak out in TWO WEEKS, it is almost NaNoWriMo time.

Hi! I'm Erika, your newest ML. If you've been around for a while, we've probably met. That's right, they gave me POWER.

Welcome to NaNo 2020.

It's gonna be weird, folks. We all know it, and we're not going to pretend any different. We're going to do our best to have a good time despite the dumpster fire that is the world right now. Fortunately, there are a lot of opportunities to find joy in a virtual NaNo, many of which build on the wonderful online community we already have. Your leadership team has been hard at work on a variety of events and platforms. Just like NaNo Live, no one thing is going to fit every need, but we hope that there'll be something for everyone.

Some Dates!

Saturday, October 24th: Zoom Movie day, featuring both an afternoon and evening show.

Saturday, October 31st: Kick-off

Friday, November 6th: Night Owl

Saturday, November 14th: Midway Madness

Sunday, November 22nd: Boot Camp

Monday, November 30th: One Last Push

Saturday, December 5th: TGIO

As well as write-ins Every. Single. Day!

So where is all this good stuff happening? Well, we're going to have Zoom events, but the majority of your NaNo goodness is going to take place in our regular online community spaces. Here are the things you may want to familiarize yourself with between now and November.

Main website: nanowrimo.org The place where it all begins. The mothership. The home and heart of NaNo. Announce your project and get to know the website features.

Region Homepage: https://nanowrimo.org/regions/usa-michigan-detroit Drop a note of encouragement and also take note of all the links to our other spaces in the box to the left.

Website: nanowrimotown.com Our website, managed by yours truly! Resources you may find helpful.

Regional Forum: https://forums.nanowrimo.org/c/regions/michigan-detroit/525 This is our section of the MUCH larger forum, where you can talk about just about anything with just about anyone. The forums can be a wee bit intimidating at first, so best get your account set up BEFORE NaNo gets started. The forum is best used for tracking events, getting Team Championship updates, and having longer conversations around individual topics. Introduce yourself today!

discord: https://discord.com/invite/GZxdWjs If you're not already on our discord server, you should be! It's the most active place in our region and where write-ins will be hosted this year. Best used for sprints and general chit chat.

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/nanowrimotown/ Post some Team Sass, connect with other members, and get the most up to date information on events.

2020 TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP! One region. Three teams. Which will write the most words and win the crown? Whose trash talk will be the sassiest? Our third annual intraregional word war is going to be fantastic, and YOU should be a part of it. Did you know that those who participate have win rates of more than DOUBLE the average NaNo participant? That can be you! Sign up today by filling out our Highly Scientific Sorting Quiz: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1_C8YcKMRplcFJpTtreSpY6NS07vntMn31vUNeRkXgGo

Our goal this year is to get everyone possible signed up BEFORE November begins. If you sign up by October 28th you will be guaranteed to have your assignment when we announce this year's theme at Kickoff! Check out the forum for a more detailed explanation of this most excellent competition.

Finally, realtalk. This year stinks. We're all stressed out for so many reasons. NaNo is different things to different people, and that's never going to be more true than this year. Whatever you do to make this year's NaNoWriMo something that helps you is the right thing.

You might want to distract yourself by achieving higher wordcounts than ever before, or you might decide that reaching 50k is A Lot to deal with and aim for something lower. You might decide to focus on your words if virtual social events aren't your bag, or that you really just want to hang out with everyone and be more casual with your story. Gonna be a rebel? GREAT. Whether it helps you to talk about all the stressors of the world or try to pretend for one sweet moment that it doesn't exist, we're going to try to provide a space for you. No matter what strategy is best for you, NaNo is supposed to be a fun time that is satisfying and makes us happy. It's our job as leadership to encourage you to strive for success, and OF COURSE we want you here with us. But what we REALLY want is for you to take care of yourself. No matter what you decide, we're here for you.

Now let's do this thing.
