The Art of Poetry: An Event Supporting the LA Library Community 🫶 with The Detroit Writing Room

Help Support the LA Library Community

Join us next week for a virtual open mic night that benefits the LAPL Palisades Branch Recovery Fund. Plus, see what's coming up!

Join us Feb. 5 for an open mic night that gives back.

We were sadden to see the LA fires destroy so many special places in the Los Angeles community, including the Palisades Branch Library.

Next week, we're hosting The Art of Poetry: A Virtual Open Mic Night Experience with DWR house poet Krystalle (aka The Sound Yogi). All proceeds from the event will benefit the LAPL Palisades Branch Recovery Fund, launched by the Library Foundation of Los Angeles.

Your support can help provide resources the LA community needs to heal and rebuild. Donations will help the LA library community:
📚 Restore children's programs, tutoring and literacy support.
📝 Assist residents with emergency relief applications.
🌐 Provide free Wi-Fi hotspots and computers to keep families connected.

Tickets:
Admission is a suggested $10 donation.

Anyone who wants to participate in the open mic should register, then email hello@detroitwritingroom.com with the following:

1. Your name

2. What you'd like to share (i.e. poet, song, story)

Krystalle will call your name during the open mic, and you can take the screen! Each participant gets up to 5 minutes to share, and you can present a second time.

Others can just join in to watch! Anyone across the country is welcome.

Registration closes on Feb. 5 at 6:30 p.m. EST.

Journalism Camp 2025

Applications are now open for our two-week summer camp for high school students this July!

We're partnering with Planet Detroit to offer a writing camp at Wayne State University this July!

Are you a high school student interested in expanding your writing, reporting and research skills? Do you have a special interest in the climate, health or environment in your community? Or do you simply enjoy storytelling and writing about issues you care about?

The Detroit Writing Room's 2025 Summer Journalism Camp in partnership with Coaching Detroit Forward and Planet Detroit is for you!

The two-week day camp will be held this July at Wayne State University's Journalism Institute for Media Diversity. Students will learn from over 25 Detroit Writing Room coaches and award-winning journalists who have worked at publications from The New York Times to The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press

The camp provides an immersive experience that teaches high school students fundamental writing and reporting skills while focusing on issues impacting their neighborhoods. Most importantly, they'll receive the tools and confidence to write about issues that matter to them and their communities. With access to some of the top editors, journalists and photographers in Detroit, students also gain mentors who can guide them to future internship and job opportunities.

This year's camp is in partnership with
Planet Detroit, a nonprofit news outlet that covers important stories about environmental, public health and social justice topics in Detroit. Each day, students will learn from journalists covering these beats and participate in interactive workshops and real-world reporting exercises.
