Documentary Movie: Standing in the Shadows of Motown (2002) Wednesday, Feb 22 | 7 pm Join us for a viewing of the documentary film: Standing in the Shadows of Motown. In 1959 Ben Gordy, Jr. gathered a group of promising musicians called "The Funk Brothers." Over the next 14 years these musicians were the house band for every #1 hit to come out of Motown, creating more chartbusters than the Elvis, the Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles combined. Three decades later, the Funk Brothers return to Detroit to reunite-and tell their unforgettable story. Refreshments will be provided. InsideOut Literary Arts Project Poetry Events IO's Poetry Corner    Sir Isaac Newton's First Law of Motion Matthew Olzmann   (published in the New England Review)    Objects in motion will remain in motion unless    acted upon by an outside force. Objects   at rest will remain at rest unless acted upon   by an outside force. Matthew Olzmann   is an object at rest, and will remain at rest,  reclining on the couch while drinking Guinness   and watching football. Or, he is an object at rest,   and will remain at rest, sprawled over the couch   while drinking Guinness and watching hockey.   Or, he could be merely napping on the couch,   having already finished a Guinness,   and though the TV is on, he's not watching,  because it's three in the afternoon and there's nothing   to watch. Where does Matthew Olzmann go   when he shuts his lovely eyes and dreams   his lovely dreams about drinking Guinness   while hunting saber-toothed tigers? Obviously,   he goes nowhere. Let me say this again. The man   is an object at rest, a legendary object at rest,   and will remain at rest unless acted upon   by his wife, who comes home shortly   and will remind him to take out the garbage   or go to the grocery store. From I.E. Effects in Traverse City As you know, the new structure of the Film Production and Digital Media Assistance Program includes a change in the way the application filing fees are collected and paid. Instead of getting taken out of the awarded incentives that are paid out on the back-end with a tax rebate, now the fee is to be submitted up front, can be quite large (no longer only $100), and it is apparently non-refundable? Even if the project is not approved? Reading over the law, I can only see where it states that an applicant's filing fee will be "deposited into the MFO fund." This, it would seem to me, means that the issue of a refundable filing fee (or a portion thereof) could be open to interpretation by the MFO and the MEDC/Dept of Treasury? Or is this language meant to imply that all fees will be kept by the MFO no matter what? Today I learned that one of the most promising projects in our pipeline- 3D conversions from FOX- is now on the fence about applying for MI incentives because of this filing fee issue. We even offered to cover the fee for them, but they said that the administrative accounting involved in such a reimbursement from us would be very problematic, and made the whole process very unappealing to them. There may be ways around this, nevertheless, our happy news about a way to help them meet their visual effects budget by using our Michigan facility, has been soured right out of the gate. Please let us know if this issue is being addressed, and how soon it might be cleared up. Our ability to benefit (and hire more artists) via the new incentives program appears to be hanging in the balance.
