June 1 Reading and discussion with Iraqi-born poet Dunya Mikhail, French-born poet Chris Tysh, and Polish translator Benjamin Paloff, followed by a screening of the cold war thriller Farewell. June 2 Reading and discussion with Chilean-born poet Mariela Griffor, Romanian-born writer Anca Vlasopolos, and Japanese translator Jeffrey Angles. Much going on with Dzanc as always, in more detail below, we've selected out SSC Contest  winner, have signed Robert Coover to print his next novel and much more, and we've continued adding books to the available list in the rEprint series. Enjoy, Dan Wickett EWN /Dzanc Books Anne Valente Named Winner of Dzanc Short Story Collection Contest May 31, 2012, Ann Arbor, MI-Dzanc Books is pleased to announce that Anne Valente is the winner of our 2011 short story collection contest. Valente's manuscript, By Light We Knew Our Names, was selected from more than 250 submissions. This collection will be published in October 2014.   Steven Gillis, Publisher and Co-Founder at Dzanc Books, notes: "Anne's writing is unique as she has the capacity to create stories that are at once magical-with baby giraffes gift-wrapped and given as birthday presents-and at the same time entirely believable and personal. The characters in each of Anne's stories are real people, fully developed and fleshed out, and yet the tales told are also brilliantly imaginative and like no others."   "I just wanted to express how absolutely thrilled I am to be among the authors that Dzanc has published and will publish," Valente reacted. Dzanc Books to Publish Robert Coover May 29, 2012 - Ann Arbor, MI-Dzanc Books is proud to announce that it will publish The Brunist Day of Wrath, the sequel to Robert Coover's award-winning debut novel, The Origin of the Brunists, in September 2013. Dzanc Books will also publish an as yet untitled Coover short story collection in September 2014. The Dzanc rEprint Series will be publishing ten of Coover's backlist titles to eBook form beginning in August 2012 and running on up through August 2013. Titles include the aforementioned award-winning The Origin of the Brunists; Pricksongs & Descants; The Public Burning; Spanking the Maid; Gerald's Party; A Night at the Movies, or You Must Remember  This; Whatever Happened to Gloomy Gus of the Chicago Bears; Pinocchio in Venice; John's Wife; and Ghost Town.   Robert Coover has published fourteen novels, three short story collections, and a collection of plays since The Origin of the Brunists received the The William Faulkner Foundation First Novel Award in 1966. At Brown University, where he has taught for over thirty years, he established the International Writers Project, a program that provides an annual fellowship and safe haven to endangered international writers who face harassment, imprisonment, and suppression of their work in their home countries.  In 1990-91, he launched the world's first hypertext fiction workshop, was one of the founders in 1999 of the Electronic Literature Organization, and in 2002 created CaveWriting, the first writing workshop in immersive virtual reality. Michiko Kakuntaini of The New York Times has said "Of all the postmodern writers, Robert Coover is probably the funniest and most malicious, mixing up broad social and political satire with vaudeville turns, lewd pratfalls, and clever word plays that make us rethink both the mechanics of the world and our relationship to it." Coover has also received awards from the Lannan Foundation, American Academy of Arts and Letters, National Endowment of the Arts, and the Rea Lifetime Short Story Award.   Dzanc's Executive Director, Dan Wickett, said of the acquisition:  "We are thrilled to be able to bring out both new and past work from Robert Coover, a favorite author of ours here at Dzanc Books for many years. To be able to bring back many of his older works to a new readership is extremely exciting and to see him return to West Condon and the Brunists after all these years with a simply fantastic novel is something we're very happy to be a part of." acebook Auburn Hills Public Library Newsletter June 2012 In This Issue Adult Young Adult/Teen Youth Friends of AHPL For Your Information Quick Links Our Web Site   Friends of AHPL News    Events Registration Calendar   Download Destination    Join Our List   What's Happening at the Library...    2012 marks the fifth and final year for the Museum Adventure Pass program.  Information on pass availability, checkout and printing now take place online.  Follow the instructions at www.detroitadventurepass.org to begin your summer adventures!     The Library staff would like to remind patrons to refrain from bringing food into the building, particularly nut products.  This is to protect the health of all patrons, and the quality of the building and its materials.  The Library Code of Conduct states:     "No person shall bring food into the building, except in connection with events catered or sponsored through the Library in approved locations. Covered beverages are allowed except in posted areas."   The Library Board has recently approved a revision of the Exam Proctoring Policy:    "Proctoring services for persons that live or work in Auburn Hills will be available for a fee of $15.00 per examination. Proctoring services for all others are available for a fee of $30.00 per examination.  Payment by cash, check or money order must be made prior to the exam being administered for proctoring services (at least seven days in advance)."        Finally, there will be an upcoming vacancy on the Library Board.  Candidates should submit a letter of interest to:     President, Library Board of Trustees 3400 East Seyburn Drive Auburn Hills, Michigan  48326   Letters will be accepted until June 29, 2012.  This position will be appointed until the next general election in November 2013, for a term that ends November 2015.  All candidates must be a resident of the city for at least one year, be a duly registered elector in the city, and have attained 21 years of age.  Regular board meetings currently occur once a month, on the fourth Tuesday at 4:30 pm, here at the Library.  We hope a wide variety of citizens will consider this opportunity.  Thank you.           Adult   MANGO LANGUAGES IS HERE! Open registration June 4-30  Parents may register their families  IN PERSON ONLY Monday-Thursday 10:30 am-8:00 pm Saturday 10:30 am-5:00 pm Register for our popular summer reading program filled with reading, games, prizes and activities for all ages. Please plan to stay for at least 20 minutes to complete the process.  Youth Summer Reading Program is open to Auburn Hills residents, Avondale students, and anyone who attends a school located in Auburn Hills.     READING GAMES Little Listeners is for children who are 2 years old, or will be 2 by August 18.  Parents read five books of their choice per week to their children.  Children have a sticker chart at the Library and receive one prize per week as they visit.      Read-To-Me is for children 3 years of age through those entering first grade.  Children listen to to books in five general categories each week, then come to the Library to complete a sticker chart and earn a trip to the "Treasure Chest."     The Daydreamers Group is for children who are entering 2nd or 3rd (or 4th) grade.  The Starcatchers Group is for children in grades 4 and 5 (and grade 6 if they choose this option), and will feature higher expectations than the Daydreamers.  Fourth graders will be allowed to choose either option.  In both groups, children choose books from many categories, answer questions, and earn "Dream Dollars" to spend in our store.  Sixth graders may choose between Starcatchers and our Young Adult Program.     Read -To-Me, Tuesdays 10:30 am/Thursdays 7:00 pm This features our storytime format some weeks, but also includes some weeks of entertainment by outside performers.  It lasts 35-40 minutes.     Daydreamers and Starcatchers, Thursdays 7:00 pm This activity will be different each week, and will be related to our "Dream Big, Read!" summer theme.  This program lasts 1 hour.     Parents:  You may also want to join in our Parent Reading Challenge.  Details will be available when you register your family.     Family Crafts, Saturdays 10:30 am-5:00 pm/Mondays 10:30 am-7:30 pm BEGINNING JUNE 23 Each weekend during the program and throughout the entire week of July 2-7 (except Wednesday and Friday), we will offer drop-in crafts for parents and children to share. Exact times will be included in registration materials.     Vikki Gasko, Ventriloquist, will be visiting the Library on Thursday, June 28 at 7 pm.  This will replace the Read-to-Me, Daydreamers' and Starcatchers' activity that week.     Call Youth Services at 248.364.6712 or visit our website at http://auburn-hills.lib.mi.us for more information.       ROCK  'N' RHYME Monday, June 4, 10:30 am (last date until September) This program is for babies under 2 and a caregiver.  ONE CHILD PER LAP, PLEASE!  The program includes organized songs, stories and finger plays followed by a free-play time for parents to chat with one another.  Registration is limited to 15 children.  Non-residents may register one week prior to each date if spaces remain.  If less than 8 children register, program will be cancelled.          KNITTING CLUB    Adults and children ages 7 and up Saturdays at noon   Whether you already know how to knit or if you'd like to learn, you are welcome to come to the Library on Saturday at noon.   A volunteer will be on hand to assist beginners. Parents: come along with your kids and learn, too!
