PEN America teams up with Flint Festival of Writers (@FlintFestWriter) for September event via @EastVillFlint September 13 & 14, 2019 #motownwriters #michlit #michiganwriters

FLINT, Mich. – Organizers of the Flint Festival of Writers announced today that renowned literary institution PEN America will partner with the festival in September 2019 to host a free workshop with 2019 PEN/Osterweil Award for Poetry Honoree Jonah Mixon-Webster.

Mixon-Webster, who grew up in Flint,  is the author of the poetry collection Stereo(TYPE) from Ahsahta Press.  The book explores the intersection of space and body, race and region, and sexuality and class and wrestles with the ongoing crisis in Flint.
His workshop, “Art Activism and Ecopoetics,” will encourage participants to see themselves as art activists with voices capable of dismantling dominant narratives. The workshop will take place at 11 a.m. Sept. 14 at the Ferris Wheel, 615 Saginaw St. It is open to the public

Board of Directors Update The Michigan Writers Board of Directors has undertaken a small re-shuffle and we would like to keep our members informed of the changes within the organization's leadership. First off, we'd like to go on record and publicly thank previous members of the board who have left recently. Thank you Jennifer Kirkpatrick-Johnson, Karen Stein, Mandy Gibson, and Tanya Muzumdar. Their service to Michigan Writers and the regional writing community has been substantial and deserves recognition. Glen Arbor Arts Center  Fall Writing Workshops The Glen Arbor Arts Center is offering two fall writing workshops with Northern Michigan author Elizabeth Kane Buzzelli. How to Begin Writing Your Novel Elizabeth Buzzelli works with students to discover how to write the best novel they can in "How To Begin Writing Your Novel," October 14 – 16, 1 – 4 pm.This workshop is tailored to writers at the beginning of their practice. Workshop costs is $120 GAAC members, and $135 nonmembers. Good writing depends on the time the writer is willing to give to the work. During this workshop students will explore ways to begin and develop their novel ideas. Time will be set aside for writing and sharing the work. Writing to Sell What makes a novel marketable? Elizabeth Buzzelli explores the mechanics of "Writing to Sell," in a two-day workshop. The workshop is tailored to advanced writers, and meets October 17 - 18, 1 – 4 pm. Workshop costs is $85 GAAC members, and $100 nonmembers. Participants will work with their in-process novel. Buzzelli will cover beginnings, plot development, character, and place. Students need to come with a synopsis either of the novel that is underway, or a story the writer hopes to develop. NILES — The Southwest Michigan Writers’ Conference returns to Niles this fall with a full schedule of skills-based sessions for aspiring authors. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26 at the Niles District Library.

The free event, which is sponsored by libraries in Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren counties, includes advice and instruction on many aspects of writing, such as researching a historic fiction novel, character development, comic book writing and more. Presenters include Barbara Belford, Marie LaPres (Erica Emelander), Barry Chessick, Carla Suson, Kirsten Jensen, Angela Sisk and Kate Collins.

The free event sponsored by libraries in Berrien, Cass and Van Buren counties, includes advice and instruction on many aspects of writing, such as researching a historic fiction novel, character development, comic book writing, and more. Presenters include Barbara Belford, Marie LaPres (Erica Emelander), Barry Chessick, Carla Suson, Kirsten Jensen, Angela Sisk and Kate Collins.
