A Season of Change: My Words My Truth…PPS Welcomes Aurora Harris and Five of the Most Brilliant Voices in Metro Area Literature Sept 1st

Ber-Henda Williams presents “My Words: How I Found My Truth!”  For September’s Poetry, Pages & Scribes series

Southfield, MI – When a woman can find her own voice and understand what power lies in that discovery; she has become a Siren. In Greek Myths, Sirens were either winged creatures or lived in the sea. The voice of the Siren was seductive and hypnotic. Ber-Henda Williams will be joined by six outstanding women writers and poets this month. This will be the prelude to Williams’ second installment of poetry, Siren Songs, a collection of poems centered on the exploration various myths, archetypes, and femlore. Poetic luminaries include: Noted scholar, educator, poet Aurora Harris, who has recently released her collection of poem entitled, Solitude of Five Black Suns, author and Poet, Monica Marie Jones, Dimonique Boyd, One Single Rose, Rhonda Welsh, and Louisa Fara’Moan. Not only are they speaking their “truth” but donating a portion of the proceeds they receive from book sales that night to area charities whom support women and girls in need.

“I believe that woman’s voice is her most powerful asset and as a member of a universal sisterhood, it is important that we uplift each other and what better way than with our words”, says Williams, Poetry, Pages and Scribes’ host and founder.  “These women have dedicated their lives to art of writing but have tied their hearts to community.”

The poets will be performing after the open mic session, which starts at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, September 1st, at the Southfield Public Library, 26300 Evergreen Road.

Each woman has chosen a charity to support, they include: Compassion International, Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center, Project S.A.F.E. (Sisters Acquiring Financial Empowerment) H.I.S. Agency (Helping Individuals Succeed) and The Power of Girlhood. Each woman is intimately tied to each one of these organizations. Dimonique Boyd, is in support of Karmanos because, “When my mom had a breast cancer scare we were fortunate enough to go to the right place the first time. We weren’t as well informed as we should have been, and many women aren’t either, so I want to support awareness and research.”

Poetry, Pages and Scribes series, has done a number of charitable efforts in the past such as, Take Back the Night Ann Arbor, a silent art auction for Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center, The American Cancer Society Relay for Life, The Power of Girlhood, a forum for young women and girls and this October they will be at Lawrence Technical University for Gilda’s Club.

For more information about the Poetry, Pages & Scribes monthly series at the Southfield Public Library go to www.poetrypagescribes.org.

Karen S. Williams, Pushcart Prize and NAACP-Image Award-nominated poet and writer, Karen S. Williams was selected a 2009 Debut Poet by Poet and Writer's Magazine, the nations most respected magazine for professional creative writers and featured on public radio's Weekend America program. She is author of two collections of poetry published by Detroit's Willow Books: the award-winning, Elegy for a Scarred Shoulder, and  Marine Life: A World in Poems. Her third book, a children's and adult fable on the power of prayer, The Blessing Chair, will be published in 2011 by Aquarius Press. Considered a deeply visionary writer, Karen is known for writing that brims with spirituality, musicality, and a perceptivity to issues of emotion, faith, history, the natural world, and culture.

JOMLP: Why does "reading rock" for you?

Karen S. Williams: Compelling reading affects our life climate. Perhaps we need rising sun, refreshing rain, cooling winds or brisk snow... The right book offers weather we need.

JOMLP: Who are your literary mentors?

Karen S. Williams:  Though I've studied with many fine writers, God is my chief mentor. He inspires and guides my creative processes. I wouldn't be writing without him.

JOMLP: What are you trying to achieve with your writing?

Karen S. Williams:  I see it as a creative planting and watering of inspiration, questions, story, vision, and desire for personal growth. It's rewarding to shape another's perspective.

Two Fireside Festival Readings remain!

This Evening! 7pm
Call Me Cass, by Margaret Edwartowski
This play with music follows Mama Cass Elliot from her time as a teenage Broadway hopeful, through her untimely death at the peak of her career. The play explores Cass' struggle with being a big woman with a bigger voice in the image oriented music industry, as well as the complicated relationships between the members of The Mamas and Papas as they sat at the forefront of the hippie music movement.

Wednesday, 7pm
 Lines, by Jeffrey Steiger
**this performance replaces the previously scheduled Bronzeville Gold, which will be featured in the winter Fireside Festival. This second reading of Lines will incorporate feedback provided by the audience at Monday night's reading**
Claire, a new grievance investigator at the University of Alabama, is assigned a case that proves to be far more complicated than it appears. When a professor with a very unique expertise is accused of sexual harassment, tables are turned as the investigation becomes less about "he said/she said," and more about Claire.

Wednesday's reading will be followed by a panel discussion on the state of new works in Michigan and around the country!
