click thru for details Flint Public Library Announcement Free Classical Music Concert Friday, December 2, 5:30 p.m. The Catalyst Quartet The Flint Pan-Hellenic Council and the Flint Public Library present a free classical music string concert with the award-winning Catalyst Quartet, 5:30 pm, Friday, December 2. Hailed by the New York Times at their Carnegie Hall debut as "invariably energetic and finely burnished...playing with earthy vigor," the Catalyst Quartet is comprised of top Laureates and alumni of the internationally acclaimed Sphinx Competition for young Black and Latino string players. The mission of the ensemble is to advance diversity in classical music and inspire new and young audiences with dynamic performances of cutting-edge repertoire by a wide range of composers. Founded by the Sphinx Organization, the Catalyst Quartet combines a serious commitment to diversity and education with a passion for contemporary works. The Catalyst Quartet will be visiting the Flint community for the Flint residency program made possible by the Ruth Mott and C.S. Mott Foundations. The Flint Pan-Hellenic Council is comprised of the six active local area alumni chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. The mission of the Sphinx Organization is to increase Black and Latino participation in music schools, as professional musicians, and as classical music audiences; to administer youth development initiatives in underserved communities through music education; and to promote the creation, performance, and preservation of works by Black and Latino composers. The Sphinx Organization provides after-school violin lessons for students in Brownell, Bunche, Bryant, Neithercut, Summerfield and Carpenter Elementary schools throughout the school year through the generous support of the Ruth Mott & C.S.
