Local Author Takes Bestselling Book to the Stage

Detroit, MI—Everyone has something in their past they’d like to forget. But when your past meets your present and threatens your future, how far will one go to keep the peace? When the Smoke Clears: The Stage Play chronicles the life of one couple who seems to have the picture perfect marriage. But when the picture becomes somewhat distorted, and cracks are revealed in the frame, will this family rebound from life’s fires or be consumed by second-hand smoke?

The book, When the Smoke Clears: A Phoenix Rises, addresses the fires of life and techniques to douse the flames, encouraging readers to resurrect from the ashes into victorious living. The book encourages readers to know that, although they may be thrust into the fire, when the smoke clears, they will emerge unscathed!

When the Smoke Clears: The Stage Play takes place on Saturday, August 12, and Sunday, August 13 at the Marlene Boll Theatre at the Boll Family YMCA in Detroit, MI. DWW's 2017 Writing Competition is now OPEN FOR SUBMISSIONS!

First Place in each category: $100.00 and Certificate; Second Place in each category: $50.00 and Certificate; Third Place in each category: Certificate.

CATEGORIES:

The MacGuffin Poetry Prize: Maximum of 3 poems. Limit:  30 lines per poem.    

The MSU Fourth Genre Creative Nonfiction Prize: Essay, memoir, book chapter, humor, history, or other nonfiction.  Limit: 500 words per submission.

Adult Fiction Prize: Submissions that show excellence in adult fiction.  Limit:  500 words per submission

Young Adult/New Adult Fiction: Short stories, excerpts from novellas or novels. Limit:  500 words per submission.

Children's Literature: Picture Books and books intended for those under the age of 10.  Limit:  500 words per submission.

WHO MAY ENTER:

Open to Michigan writers 18 and older of any skill level.  DWW Board members and Conference Committee members are not eligible to enter.

All work must be original and previously unpublished.  Writers will retain all rights to their work. 

HOW TO ENTER:

 All entries must be submitted by mail as follows:

• Contact information is to be printed on an index card (name, address, email, phone, category, and title of each work submitted) and submitted with your entry/entries.
• Print the contest category and title of the work on the first page of each entry.
• Submit works only in the English language and use a 12 point serif font such as Times New Roman.  
• Include with your entry/entries a check payable to 

  Detroit Working Writers.  Please include fees in the following amounts: 

  $10.00 for one entry, $20.00 for up to three total entries, regardless of 

  category.  Once submitted, entry fees are not refundable.

Winners will be announced at the DWW Writing Conference to be held on September 16, 2017, at the MSU Management Education Center in Troy.

DWW reserves the right not to award a prize or prizes if enough entries are not received for a particular genre or the caliber of entries submitted is not strong enough to earn an award.

Join us at the Detroit Public Library for an up close & personal conversation with April Ryan, a 30-year award-winning journalist, author, White House correspondent, CNN political analyst and 2017 NABJ Journalist of the Year. Ryan has been the White House Correspondent for American Urban Radio Networks (AURN) since January of 1997, covering three Presidents. 

Ryan is also the author of two best-selling books ... The Presidency In Black and White: My Up Close View of Three Presidents and Race in America and At Mama Knee: Mother and Race in Black and White. 

The Presidency in Black and White was named by NBC NEWS as one of 14 books to read during Black History Month 2015. As a White House Correspondent and Washington Bureau Chief, Ryan has been afforded the opportunity to write the book in a first-hand account through her daily responsibilities at the White House.

 

Ryan shifts the conversation from the White House to every home in America with At Mama's Knee   Ryan.looks at race and race relations through the lessons that mothers transmit to their children.  As a single African-American mother in Baltimore, Ryan has struggled with each gut wrenching, race-related news story to find the words to convey the right lessons to her daughters.

Free Detroit Beer Book History Talk on August 8th at Motor City Brewing Works in Detroit at 7pm featuring Stephen Johnson the author of "Detroit Beer - A History of Brewing in the Motor City" and owner of Motor City Brew Tours.

This free event starts at 7pm and includes a talk providing history of the early breweries in downtown Detroit and all the way up to the start of craft beer breweries in the 1990's. Stephen Johnson will have copies of his book for sale and will sign copies at the conclusion of the talk. To better plan for the space within Motor City Brewing Works - 470 W. Canfield St. Detroit, MI 48201, we ask you to pre-register for this this free event. DESCRIPTION

Rust City Book Con is a super casual intimate convention and book signing in Troy, MI, with the intent to introduce readers to new authors and genres, as well as the chance to interact with current favorites. We have a fabulous lineup of authors, ranging from indie to NYT Bestsellers, that will be sure to tempt readers of all walks of life.

We'll be focusing on all GENRE fiction, so there's bound to be some interesting and diverse topics discussed at the daily panels. In the evenings we'll be partying and creating some fascinating mayhem with meet & greets, or as I like to call them, mini-parties.

While there is a schedule, there is also time for authors and readers to simply hang out. It's all but guaranteed that readers will have plenty of one-on-one interactions with the attending authors.

Saturday’s book sale and signing is open to convention attendees, and also FREE to the public. However we are asking everyone to bring a gently used book (childrens through adult) to help fill a new #LittleFreeLibrary to be installed within the community after the event. The library will be revealed/displayed throughout the weekend.

I know many readers tend to stick with their preferred genres, and there's nothing wrong with that; but you never know what you'll find, what you'll like, until you take a leap of faith. Join us August 4-6, 2017 and discover the authors who write the stories we love to read!
