Event Details

Please join Mistress of Ceremonies Carmen Harlan, Host Rochelle Riley, our stellar Honorary Chairpersons and our fabulous Media Celebrities for the fourth annual Every December Fundraiser for Literacy!
For 14 years, no one has done more than Rochelle to shine a light on the need for improved adult reading across southeast Michigan. We are proud to announce that, beginning this year, Rochelle is turning her attention to parents because parent literacy is an early education issue.  All proceeds go to the Dominican Literacy Center and the Mercy Education Project and their efforts to ensure that parents are prepared to raise – and teach – their children.
So put on your dancing shoes and join us! There will be great food,  wonderful stories and a chance to change Detroit's narrative.

Newspaper columnist Rochelle Riley,  the conscience of southeast Michigan, first sounded the alarm in 2001 that adult literacy was a problem in southeast Michigan. After being the first to tell the stories of adults learning to read for the first time, Rochelle is switching her focus from job-seeking to child readiness. She is now focusing on parents because parent literacy is an early childhood education issue. Making sure that parents can be better partners with teachers might help break a cycle of poverty that plagues our region. This is the way to change the narrative for Detroit's future taxpayers: Placing the responsibility for children's success on parents as well as teachers and ensuring that parents are completely equipped to do the job! Please join Rochelle and honorary chairpersons Lori Maher, Marla Drutz, Carol Goss, Jaqueline Wilson, Trina Govan Scott, Florine Mark, Karla Hall, Penny Bailer, Karla Henderson, Tonya Matthews, Janice Cosby Bridges, Tiffany S. Douglas, Glenda Price, the Rev. Dr. Georgia Hill, Beth Chappell, Betty Brooks, Roz Blanck, Sheilah Clay and Alison Vaughn in celebrating reading! Please come kick up your heels with media stars Carmen Harlan, Huel Perkins, Chuck Stokes, Paul W. Smith, Nolan Finley, Jim Schaefer, Vickie Thomas, Cyndy Canty, Jerome Vaughn and Marie Osborne all to make Detroit a better place!
