Register in-person for a nine week ESL (English as a Second Language) class conducted by Diane and Richard Goers. Classes run Friday mornings from September 9th through November 4th.

9/11: Ten Years Later

Please join us in the Westland Public Library's efforts to remember the tragic events of September 11th, 2001.

9/11 Journaling Project

Where were you on the morning of September 11th, 2001? How has your life (and our world) changed as a result? Journals will be available at the Reference Desk for anyone interested in sharing their post-9/11 thoughts and feelings through writing.

9/11 Memory Writing

Saturday, Sep 10 | 1-4 pm

This open-ended workshop is for all who would like to write about their experiences with this most heartbreaking and tragic of national events. View pictures, engage in discussions, and use writing prompts to explore feelings and experiences. Patrons are not required to write anything to attend. For those interested, their writings will be entered into the library's 9/11 journal.

102 Minutes that Changed America: Movie and Discussion*

Monday, Sep 12 | 6 pm

Join us for a viewing of the History Channel's 102 Minutes That Changed America. Kathryn Casa, former journalist and current Director of Communications at ACCESSDetroit, will moderate discussion before and after the movie. If you're interested in more events like this, please visit the site www.usrising.org, sponsored by ACCESS. Refreshments provided.

Digital Scrapbooking*

Tuesday, Sep 13 | 7 pm

Sign up to learn the how you can use your computer to create beautiful scrapbooking projects. Let Dawn Montagano, scrapbooking expert will provide an overview of the whole process and an introduction to Studio J online design software. Computers will be provided. Basic computer skills required.

Baseball During the Civil War

day, Sep 19 | 7 pm

Join local historian and teacher, Jeff Koslowski, as he discusses the origins of baseball from its beginnings as a regionalized kid's game to a professional game resembling what we know today.  Hear about the impact the Civil War had on the game and see reproductions of the equipment used during the 1860's. Also, get the inside scoop on the Historic Baseball Game between the Greenfield Village Lah-De-Dahs and the Westland Zip-a-dee-doo-dah's on Sunday, September 25th.

Documentary Movie: Restrepo (2010)

Wednesday, Sep 07 | 7 pm

Join us for a viewing of the documentary film: Restrepo. Spend 90 minutes in one of the most dangerous deployments for the U.S. military. Restrepo, nicknamed for a medic who was killed in action, is a strategically crucial valley in northeastern Afghanistan, the setting for the entirety of this documentary. No breakaway interviews, just constant danger, hard work, and the camaraderie of soldiers. Come spend an hour and a half in their shoes. Refreshments will be provided.

The Writers Workshop critiques individuals' writing in a workshop setting. All genres accepted. We will tell you what is what is working with your piece, as well as what needs improvement.

Like to play chess? Come to the Westland Chess Group and hang out and play a couple of games. Bring your own board or use one of ours. Novices to chess masters are all welcome.

Drop-In Knitting Night

Wednesdays | 7 pm

Join Linda Sparkman of Black sheep Northville as she provides group and individual instruction. All skill levels are welcome.

Job Seekers Lab

Each year, our Teen Advisory Board holds a Library Lock-In. We'll play games, eat pizza, watch movies, and read books all night long. If you'd like to attend, please fill out and return the questionnaire available in our Teen Area by Wednesday, Sep 07.

Children's Non-Fiction Challenge

Children will read books at their own reading level from many different subject areas. Each category completed will earn an entry for a chance to win a jar of treats, a gift card or other cool prize! Earn weekly coupons and prizes along the way. Finishers can choose a free book to keep!

The "Michigan Reads" featured book for 2011 is Devin Scillian's Memoirs of a Goldfish.  All week our storytimes will feature this charming book followed by a craft.  Also, in honor of Library Card Sign-Up Month, show your library card to the presenter for a special treat!
