Reading Help Available for Adults

The Westland Public Library has begun to offer literacy tutoring to adults interested in improving their reading skills. If you or someone you know is interested in this program, please call or visit Kristy in the Reference department.

Summer Reading Program Continues for Teens and Adults

Teens (Grades 7 - 12)*

Keep track of your reading to earn awesome prizes! Ends August 6th.

Adults (Ages 18+)*

"Explore the World in Your Back Yard"

Fantasy Football League Draft*

Documentary Movie: Afghan Star (2009)

Wednesday, Aug 17 | 7 pm

Join us for a viewing of the documentary film: Afghan Star. Follows four contestants on the reality show/talent competition similar to our own American Idol. The filmmakers follow Hameed, Setara, Rafi and Lema through the show's third season as each competes for a spot in the national spotlight. The film highlights the unifying effect of music and popular culture across cultural lines in a post-Taliban Afghanistan without forgetting the conservative religious culture in which the contestants live their day-to-day lives. Refreshments will be provided.

Like to play chess? Come to the Westland Chess Group and hang out and play a couple of games. Bring your own board or use one of ours. Novices to chess masters are all welcome.

Drop-In Knitting Night

Join Linda Sparkman of Black sheep Northville as she provides group and individual instruction. All skill levels are welcome.

Job Seekers Lab

Children's Non-Fiction Challenge

Begins Monday, Aug 01

Children will read books at their own reading level from many different subject areas. Each category completed will earn an entry for a chance to win a jar of treats, a gift card or other cool prize! Earn weekly coupons and prizes along the way. Finishers can choose a free book to keep!

Summer Sidewalk Chalk

Saturday, Aug 06 | 10 am

Please join us for a morning of fun as we decorate our sidewalks with colorful chalk! What kinds of scenes and creatures can you draw? All supplies will be provided. Note: This program is weather-permitting.

Make It/Take It Craft

I Spy Around Westland*

Ages 5+ | Friday, Aug 12 | 10:30 am

Come be part of this summer's family "I Spy" competition! Each family will get a sheet of pictures that they will have to find and retake (with your family) around the city. To do this you will need a car and a camera (digital/phone).

Book Clubs

Beginners, 3rd and 4th Grade and 5th and 6th Grade book clubs will return in October.
