Omar Gooding on Jo Magazine

Dayton, Ohio - August 4, 2011 - On Saturday, August 27, 2011, Omar Gooding will honor JO Magazine for its first year in publication. In addition to a red-carpet entrance, this formal affair includes award presentations, live entertainment and dinner. The event will be held from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM at the Dayton Convention Center, 22 East Fifth Street, Dayton, Ohio 45402. Event tickets can be purchased at Wendells' Bootery, 2823 Philadelphia Drive, Dayton, Ohio 45405

Joleen K Norman, CEO and publisher of JO Magazine, says, "After years of working as a booking agent and meeting thousands of talented, entertainment people, I wanted to create something to showcase awesome women of color. As our popularity grew, so did the demand to feature men in JO-the place to get down-to-earth soul on paper." The inaugural publication launched February 2010. Within a year, the magazine has acquired retail distribution across the United States including select Books-A-Million and Barnes and Noble stores. "Omar was featured in the September 2010 issue. We are so excited that he will be hosting the event and bringing Hollywood to Dayton." Live entertainment for the gala features international jazz saxophonist, Pamela Williams.

Charlotte L. Brown, book seller and writer for JO Magazine, says, "My contribution to this unique publication is facilitation of book reviews-featuring national and local authors-and JO's Bestsellers List. This year's award recipients include Victoria Rowell, humanitarian, author and actress and Dayton's own, Valerie J. Lewis Coleman. Both ladies will be honored for their literary contributions." Based on sales reports from Amazon, Dayton Book Expo and JO Magazine's online bookstore, top-selling authors will be recognized at subsequent galas.

About Omar Gooding

Growing up in a household with parents who were successful singers and an Academy-Award winning brother could prove daunting for anyone with show-business ambitions. Still, the tall, affable Omar Gooding has managed to carve a niche as a successful actor. From commercials to sitcoms to movies, Gooding's child-star credentials include Webster, Blossom, Hangin' with Mr. Cooper, Smart Guy and Nickelodeon's Wild & Crazy Kids. Although he made his feature acting debut in the Bill Cosby vehicle Ghost Dad in 1990, Gooding's critical praise derived from his role in Baby Boy. Tapped by director John Singleton-who first recognized the talents of Cuba Gooding, Jr.-Gooding played a pivotal role as the title character's friend in the 2001 film.
