Register for Free ESL Classes!*

Friday, Feb 24 | 9:30 - 11 am

Register in-person for an eight-week ESL (English as a Second Language) class conducted by Diane and Richard Goers. Classes run on Fridays from March 2nd through May 18th from 9:30 to 11:00 am (no class on April 20 & 27). Students with children are welcome!

Adult Literacy Tutor Training - Registration ends February 21st!*

Would you like to help an adult learn to read? We will be hosting adult literacy tutor training March 3, 10 and 17 (9:30-3:30). See Kristy in the Reference department by Tuesday, February 21 for details and to register for this great volunteer opportunity.

Join Jerisha Hawkins, experienced tax preparer, as she shares free online tools that are available to use as you prepare your taxes online. Jerisha will demonstrate how to use these tools and provide examples to guide you through tax preparation. Taxpayers who earn $57,000.00 or less can choose from approximately 20 commercial software programs to use free of charge.

Chef Reva Constantine: A Life in Food*

We will spotlight local chef, Reva Constantine, her rise to Executive Chef status at Joe's Produce in Livonia, and also her recent 1st place finish at the 2011 Arts, Beats, and Eats Chef Duel. Chef Reva will give a cooking demonstration.

Researching African-American Genealogy*

Hit a wall when searching your family's history? African American Genealogy records are much more difficult to find due to the scant nature of record keeping for blacks prior to the Civil War. Learn how to be more successful in your research. Kris Rzepczynski, Library or Michigan Genealogy Coordinator, will present an informational session for beginners and advanced genealogists.

Glory: Viewing and Discussion

Thursday, Feb 23 | 6-9 pm

Join us for a viewing of Glory, the story about a band of African-American soldiers fighting for freedom during the American Civil War. Historian and educator, Jeff Koslowski, will provide pop-up history during the movie and answers questions afterwards.

Documentary Movie: Standing in the Shadows of Motown (2002)

Wednesday, Feb 22 | 7 pm

Join us for a viewing of the documentary film: Standing in the Shadows of Motown. In 1959 Ben Gordy, Jr. gathered a group of promising musicians called "The Funk Brothers." Over the next 14 years these musicians were the house band for every #1 hit to come out of Motown, creating more chartbusters than the Elvis, the Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles combined. Three decades later, the Funk Brothers return to Detroit to reunite-and tell their unforgettable story. Refreshments will be provided.

Make your own delicious bento box lunch. Bento Boxes are traditional Japanese lunches that make food fun! We'll make a basic bento that will include a sandwich and a few small sides. A peanut butter alternative will be used in case of peanut allergies. 

Marvel vs. CapCom 3 Tournament*

Compete in our Marvel Vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds tournament. We'll be playing on the X-Box 360. Play as the Hulk, Magneto, Deadpool, Chun-Li, and others from the Marvel or Capcom universe.
