Detroit Public Library March 2012 In This Issue 2012 African American Bookist Burton Wins Honors Monteith & Chandler Park News Doodle 4 Google Hot Read of the Month Now Available!!!     The 2012 African American Booklist   Pick up your copy today or visit our website to download             Looking for a great new book to read?  Get all the information you need from the Detroit Public Library's African American Booklist.   Reviewed by our Librarians, the African American Booklist provides to you a one-stop resource for choosing an interesting new book to read...   Check it out!            Interested in the Detroit Public Library?  Check us out on Facebook, Twitter or YouTube                        Join Our Mailing List         The Detroit Public Library Wins Honors at State History Awards     The Burton Historical Collection is honored at the 137th Annual meeting of the Historical Society of Michigan        DPL Friends Foundation Executive Director Patrice Merritt accepting State History Award.          The Historical Society of Michigan presented its 2011 State History Awards at the 137th Annual Meeting and State History Conference in Traverse City this year and presented the Detroit Public Library's Burton Historical Collection with honors.   The Collection was presented the 2011 State History Award in the Restoration/Preservation category.      The Burton ranks as one of America's premier cultural resources.  Founded in 1915, the collection includes thousands of original archival collections that document the history of New France, the Great Lakes region, the Old Northwest, and Michigan.   Beginning in 2008, the Detroit Public Library began a project to develop an online public access catalog to help researches around the world access the Burton Collection.   Staff members of the Burton and students from Wayne State University have cataloged 4,000 archival collections to be added to WorldCat and MeLCat to allow searchable access to the catalog citations.   The project has resulted in a 56 percent increase in the number of researchers using the Detroit Public Library's Burton Historical Collection between 2007-2010.      Authorization to Re-Open Monteith & Adjust Hours at Chandler Park      Visit us on our website at www.detroitpubliclibrary.org   to get detailed information as it relates to the changes at Chandler Park and the re-opening of the Monteith  Branch Library.               2012 Comerica Java & Jazz Concert Series     Join us this month beginning March 20 for the 12th season of the Comerica Java & Jazz concert series at the Detroit Public Library - Main Library...       Doodling During Class Could Win Your Child's School $50k!!!       We are so excited to announce that we are a local partner for Michigan in this year's Doodle 4 Google competition! This is an amazing opportunity for K-12 students to re-design the Google logo along this year's theme "If I could travel in time, I'd visit... ."    The winning doodler will take home a $30,000 college scholarship and a $50,000 technology grant for his or her school. Even more exciting, the winning artwork from Michigan will be featured on Google's homepage and in a special exhibition in our main gallery!
