Dayton Book Expo - Where book lovers connect
Dayton Book Expo Features Amazing Child Author Kristina Cardoza

Dayton, Ohio - On Saturday, April 28, 2012, authors from around the world will gather for the third annual Dayton Book Expo. In addition to book signings, the one-day expo will feature panel discussions for aspiring authors, spoken word, activities for children in the Kidz Zone and featured child author, Kristina Cardoza. The event will be held from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM in the Great Hall at Sinclair Community College's Ponitz Conference Center, 444 West Third Street, Dayton, Ohio 45402. The family-friendly event is free and open to the public.

Kristina Cardoza penned Pinky Bunny's First Day of Kindergarten when she was five years old. The whimsical story, also illustrated by Kristina, empowers young readers to overcome fears, forgive bullies and recognize colors.

Kristina says, "I wrote this story because I wanted to express how I felt on my first day of kindergarten: no friends, was shy and wanted to stay home because I missed my old friends." As a military family-her father is an officer at Wright Patterson Air Force Base-the Cardozas have relocated several times. The transitions were less daunting with the aid of a gift from Kristina's grandmother: a pink, stuffed rabbit. "I have been reading since I was one which is why I enjoy reading and writing." Kristina is writing her second book, A Tale of Two Wizards, with her younger brother, Sean.

Daniella Cardoza, the mother of these amazing children, says, "Kristina has a heart to help others. To nurture that gift, instill community service and help her develop a strong bond with other girls, I enrolled her in Girl Scouts of America." As a troop co-leader, Daniella coordinates field trips and teaches the girls computer technology, graphics design and science. "Kristina is an exceptional child. She has a brown belt in martial arts, excels at organized soccer and is mastering middle school coursework which is two years above her age." Daniella home schools her children through Ohio Virtual Academy. The self-paced curriculum is individualized to meet each child's academic needs.

Valerie J. Lewis Coleman, expo co-founder says, "What better way to promote youth literacy in our community than to feature a literary wonder as special as Kristina?" Coleman, who is a bestselling author and publisher, travels the country conducting publishing workshops. "We are excited to have our first child author and hope to encourage more children to join the Dayton Book Expo." As part of the day's activities, Kristina will talk about her writing experience and read her book to the Kidz Zone kids.

Charlotte Brown, bookseller and expo co-founder, says "Marketing is the most difficult aspect of the book business so we incorporated tools to provide authors with exposure long after the expo." Brown will be reporting sales to the New York Times Bestsellers List. Top sellers in each genre will be awarded a crystal plaque, book medallions and year-long presence at DaytonBookExpo.com. The 2011 bestsellers were as follows:

  • Dorinda Nusum, author of The Back Pew Crew (fiction)
  • Crystal V. Rhodes, author of Grandmothers Incorporated (nonfiction)
  • Jemal Gibson, author of My Drugs, My Curse My Savior (biography)
  • Daisy Peterson, author of The Love of a Faith-Filled Child (inspirational)
  • Marcella Barrett, author of And the Tree Cried Out (children's)
  • Koery Beavers, contributor to A Kingdom Waiting (Passionate Pens Top Student)
  • Donna Cox, author of No Longer Afraid (virtual bookstore)

Expo co-founder and award-winning author, LaTonya Branham, says, "Our sponsors contribute to the success of the event by creating a platform to introduce new authors to Dayton. Again this year, the Dayton Book Expo serves as a great place to learn about local colleges and universities."
