Lisa Lutz is the author of the Edgar Award- nominated Spellman mystery series about an eccentric family of sleuths. The latest title in the series is Trail of the Spellmans (#5). Lutz has won the Alex award and been nominated for the Edgar Award for Best Novel.The Book Beat will be selling books at the event.   Sat., March 17th: Rick Lieder Photo Exhibition & Helen Frost book launch at Book Beat Book Beat will host a book launch and photography exhibition at the Book Beat gallery on Saturday, March 17th from 6-8 PM with local  photographer Rick Lieder and author Helen Frost. Photos on display will be from their newly published book,  Step Gently Out. The exhibition will continue through Sunday, April 1st, 2012.  Step Gently Out is an informative children's book featuring poems about insects and nature along with the full-color photographs.  For more information contact Book Beat at 248-968-1190. We are located at 26010 Greenfield in Oak Park, MI.   Sun., March 18th: Read in the Park Returns to Berkley High School Book Beat is happy to announce that the Read in the Park event will be returning this year on Sunday, March 18 from 1 to 3 p.m at Berkley High School. March is Reading Month and in celebration we've invited five of our favorite authors and illustrators to speak and autograph books for children and families.  This family event is free and open to the public.  This is the 5th year of Read in the Park and the participating authors this year will be Helen Frost, photographer Rick Lieder, Kelly DiPucchio, Scott Seegert and illustrator John Martin (and perhaps a visit from their friend Vordak the Incomprehensible?) Read in the Park will be held in the Collaborative Center at Berkley High School.  (It is on 2325 Catalpa, at 11 and 1/2 mile East of Coolidge facing Catalpa.)  click HERE for a LISTING of all books at the event. The mission of Read in the Park is to foster a love of reading by connecting with authors and illustrators through the books they create. Two Events With Best-Selling Suspence author Sandra Brown on Thurs., March 22nd! Farmington Community Library welcomes the prolific and best-selling author Sandra Brown for  two Metro-Detroit appearances on Thursday, March 22 to promote the release of her latest book and 2012's Everyone's Reading selection, Lethal. The afternoon event will begin at 2pm in the Rochester Church of Christ (250 West Avon Road, Rochester Hills, MI). The evening event will begin at 7pm in Adat Shalom Synagogue (29901 Middlebelt Rd. Farmington Hills, MI). She will be speaking and signing books which will be available for purchase at both events courtesy of Book Beat. For more info and ticket availability contact your local participating library, which you can find here.   Tuesday, March 27th Newbery Winner Christopher Paul Curtis Michigan native, Newbery winner and best-selling children's literature author Christopher Paul Curtis will be coming to Groves High School in Birmingham on Tuesday, March 27 at 7:00 – 8:30 pm. He will be speaking, signing books and introducing his latest title, The Mighty Miss Malone. It's written for ages 9 and up, partly takes place in Detroit, Michigan and features a character first introduced in Curtis's best-selling book, Bud, Not Buddy. The event is free and open to the public and co-sponsored by Book Beat, the Baldwin Public Library and the Birmingham Public Schools Diversity and Library Media Department. Book Beat reading group selection: The Hour of the Star So long as I have questions to which there are no answers, I shall go on writing. – Clarice Lispector, The Hour of the Star The Book Beat reading group will meet on Wednesday, April 4th at 7:00 PM at the Goldfish Teahouse in Royal Oak, MI to discuss the novella THE HOUR OF THE STAR by Brazilian author Clarice Lispector (1920-1977) .
