Dead Man's Shoes

AnnArbor.com's Jenn Mckee recently sat down with playwright Joseph Zettelmaier to pick his brain on his most recent work,
Dead Man's Shoes.

"if you're imagining the playwright performing terse, Eastwood-esque showdowns in the privacy of his own home during the writing process, you wouldn't be far off. 'That wouldn't be entirely inaccurate' said Zettelmaier."

Dead Man's Shoes is a limited engagement run, and will close April 8.

Six-time Tony Award-winner makes its Michigan premiere at Performance Network!

For two years from 1958-59, the abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko worked feverishly in his Bowery St. studio on Manhattan's lower East side, on what was at the time the

costliest commission in art history. A Russian immigrant from humble beginnings, he worked on a series of enormous murals that would adorn a bastion of capitalism - the famous Four Seasons Restaurant in Mies Van der Rohe's Seagrams Building.

John Logan's Tony-winning play paints a picture of the fiery artist as he works intensely on the paintings, with the help of his apprentice, struggling with his personal demons to bring forth what would be his life's major accomplishment.

Award-winning set designer Monika Essen will create comparable size pieces for the show that are inspired by Rothko's works. You may have seen Monika's artwork in such productions as God of Carnage, Marie Antoinette: The Color of Flesh, or Woman Before a Glass.
