 Sad News... bricklayer

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I received word last week that Paul Lindsay,  aka Noah  Boyd, the author I'd dubbed the next Lee Child and the man over 90 of you were signed up to come meet last spring, has passed away at age 68 of leukemia.    Here is an excerpt from a letter his family sent to his bookselling friends via his publicist:

I am dying.  A single cell, damaged and then mutated, is now multiplying at a Pandorian rate through my bloodstream.  The aberration was triggered, from best guesses, by Agent Orange, the defoliant dumped so generously-18,000,000 gallons or so-on Vietnam to help keep American troops alive.  An irony that is life itself.  For me, it was over forty years ago.  The medical term is Chronic Lyphocytic Leukemia, or to those of us on more intimate footing, CLL.  The disease has reached stage four, and unfortunately there is neither a cure nor a stage five.

. . . I have been the recipient of a great deal of luck in my life.  But as John Steinbeck wrote in The Pearl, "Luck, you see, brings bitter friends."  Recent events have made it apparent that good fortune is nothing more than a temporary statistical anomaly, which given enough time has little choice but to swing in an opposite and equal arc.  In my case, leukemia.  Given the extraordinary adventure my good luck has provided to my years, I can offer no complaint about the pendulum's final resting place.

Somehow the summer signing season hasn't wound down here at the bookstore (do you like how I say this as if I am totally perplexed as to how this could be?)...there are three events coming up yet this month, two of which require a free ticket, so read on and mark your calendars!

medieval murders First Up:  Aaron Stander  Sat., Sept. 17th 11:30-1:30

We are happy to welcome back Aaron Stander, bestselling author of four Ray Elkins mysteries - Summer People, Color Tour, Deer Season and Shelf Ice,  who will sign his fifth novel, Medieval Murders, at Saturn on Saturday, September 17th. He will visit us from 11:30 a.m. -1:30 p.m. to meet his fans and sign his books in a 'sit and sign' style event.

Medieval Murders is a prequel chronicling Sheriff Ray Elikins' younger years. In this novel, Ray is a professor of criminal justice at a state university where three members of the English department meet untimely ends. Stander says readers will recognize "... a younger Ray Elkins, more hair, fewer pounds, but still very grounded."

Wade Rouse: I'm Not the Biggest Bitch in This Relationship

Wed., Sept. 21st, 6pm - FREE TICKET REQUIRED

Wade Rouse, who has attracted standing-room-only audiences to Saturn Booksellers for his past events for At Least In The City Someone Would Hear Me Scream and It's All Relative, will return to read from and discuss the anthology of dog stories he's edited, I'm Not the Biggest Bitch in this Relationship, in which some of America's best known humorists - authors, comedians, and actors - offer 'biting commentary' on what it means to share a life, and a heart, with a dog, on Wednesday, September 21st at 6pm.

                 biggest bitch

Wade is donating a portion of the book's proceeds to the Humane Society of the United States, and so of course we had to cook up an event with some local impact.  We are holding a pet photo contest. Everyone is encouraged to drop off or email us their pet photos in two categories: Best Dressed Pet and Pet/Owner Look-Alikes.   Customers are voting with donations of pet food, chew toys or money that we will donate to our local Animal Shelter. Each item or monetary donation receives one vote, and the winner will receive a fun prize.

In addition, Wade's nutty partner, Gary, is planning to wear a dog costume (and if you've been here for one of Wade's past events, you can totally envision this) for the event, and only further donations will spring him from 'the doghouse'!

Rouse has quickly established himself as one of America's favorite memoirists (and is, according to Writer's Digest, "One of the Top 10 Writers, Dead or Alive, We'd Love to Have Drinks With"...Wade was #2, behind Ernest Hemingway, and ahead of Hunter S. Thompson, an honor he puts on the same level as winning the Pulitzer).

Join the cult...attend a Wade Rouse signing!

P.J. Parrish, The Killing Song

Thurs., Sept. 29th, 6pm - FREE, TICKETED EVENT

New York Times bestselling crime novelist P.J. Parrish will visit Saturn to promote their newest, and stand-alone, mystery, The Killing Song, on Thursday evening, September 29th at 6pm.

P.J. Parrish is the pseudonym for two sisters, Kristy Montee and Kelly Nichols, who were raised in Detroit and now live in Florida and Northern MI, respectively.

We are really excited to host Kristy and Kelly again.  Their new novel, The Killing Song, may just be my favorite of all of their books. It's a bestseller here already, and we have fans coming from all over the state for this event.

The Killing Song takes place in Florida and in Paris, where a journalist is pursuing the elusive trail of the man who murdered his sister, leaving behind her iPod loaded with the killer's own musical selection.

We'll be having a 'mystery musical giveaway' in honor of the storyline. And that's all I can tell you, 'cause it's a mystery...
