In 2007, the Josie Odum Morris Literacy Project (JOMLP) was birthed out of an identified need for a family literacy agency in Inkster, Michigan. Spearheaded by Young People For (YP4) fellow Robin Morris, a group of community leaders and educators came together to establish JOMLP, a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit agency committed to providing new books, forums, literacy workshops, and one-to-one reading and writing tutors to children and adults who live in the Metro Detroit area. We salute Young People For for their continued commitment to supporting youth-led social justice initiatives nationwide that yield long-term community change. JOMLP exist because YP4 believed in our vision of creating innovative literacy programs for youth, adults, and families to achieve their full potential. Young People For is now recruiting for the Young People For (YP4) Fellowship program. YP4 is a strategic long-term leadership development program that identifies, engages and empowers the newest generation of progressive leaders to create lasting change in their communities. The one-year fellowship equips college students with the skills and resources necessary to create lasting change on their campuses and in their communities. Fellows receive access to: ---Training from national and regional progressive movement leaders ---One-on-one coaching from YP4 staff and/or other progressive movement leaders ---Assistance and support in implementing a sustainable, community-driven action plan Apply for the Fellowship today or nominate another progressive leader on campus! Prior to joining YP4, she served as the Program Manager for the District of Columbia Youth Advisory Council (DCYAC) in the Executive Office of the Mayor. Rebecca has spent her career fighting to break down the barriers that prevent low-income, first generation, students of color from accessing higher education. She has served as the Legislative Director for the United States Student Association (USSA); founded in 1947, USSA is the voice of students on Capitol Hill, in the White House, and the Department of Education. She provided trainings to students nationwide and has been featured on C-SPAN, in the Washington Post, and the New York Times discussing higher education access and affordability issues. She is also a mentor for College Bound which prepares 8th-12th grade students for college and as an Executive Committee Member and Chair of the Young Adult Committee for the DC Branch NAACP. Rebecca is a graduate of the Women's CampaignSchool at Yale and is a graduate of Northern Michigan University. Join Us! Rebbeca M. Thompson will speak at the 2nd Annual Literacy Day Extravaganza to be held on Saturday, September 17, 2011. She will also be available to speak with college students who are committed to addressing social justice issues in their community about fellowship opportunities with Young People For (YP4).
