click thru for details Schuler Books & Music | 40 Fountain | Grand Rapids | MI | 49503 Local Poetry Night with Jennifer Burd and rendered into song by Laszlo Slomovits   This month's event will feature Jennifer Burd, poet, and Laszlo Slomovits, musician, both from Ann Arbor. Jennifer has had poetry published in numerous journals, and her full-length book of poems, Body and Echo, was published by PlainView Press in 2010. She is also the author of a book of creative nonfiction, Daily Bread: A Portrait of Homeless Men & Women of Lenawee County, Michigan based on her experiences reporting on local homelessness for the Adrian, Michigan, Daily Telegram. Burd received her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Washington, and currently works as an editor and writer for the HighScope Educational Research Foundation in Ypsilanti, Michigan.   Jennifer will read new poems as well selections from Body and Echo, which addresses hunger and body image, among other themes. Laszlo will provide improvised accompaniment on guitar and folk flutes to the reading of some of the poems, and he will also sing some of Jennifer's poems that he has set to music.   Laszlo Slomovits is one of the twin brothers in Ann Arbor's nationally-known children's folk music duo, Gemini (GeminiChildrensMusic.com) and has given concerts throughout the U.S. A number of his award-winning songs are featured in songbooks music teachers use throughout the country. In addition to his performances, song-writing, and recording for children, Laszlo has also recorded five CDs of the poetry of Rumi and Hafiz, 12th and 13th Century Sufi Mystics, in translations by Coleman Barks and Daniel Ladinsky, which he has set to music (PoetryIntoSong.com). Monday, November 21 @ 7:00pm Booksigning with Allie Phillips, author How Shelter Pets are Brokered for Experimentation   Back in the 1940s, the practice referred to as "pound seizure" became a common practice in taxpayer-funded animal shelters across the country. Whether for cosmetic testing, human or animal drug testing, medical technique and tool testing, or biochemical testing, these once-family pets are subjected to experimentation that often ends in death. While many states fail to keep accurate data, the number of pets that become victims of pound seizure easily reaches the thousands and though most citizens are unaware of the practice, it may very well be happening at their local animal shelter. Pound seizure remains a dirty little secret in American society, but the practice is moving toward extinction with the help of local citizens advocating for change at their shelter, as well as animal rescue and welfare organizations providing assistance and advocacy. Learning more about the practice, as well as alternatives, will help give readers a fuller picture of what's happening in American animal shelters and what they can do to stem the tide of dealers and brokers sweeping off animals to their almost-certain demise.   Allie will be joined by Carol Manos of Carol's Ferals for community awareness of ethical treatment of animals. We are reading The Blue Zones, by Dan Buettner, a National Geographic fellow who traveled the globe uncovering the best strategies for longevity in the Blue Zones: places in the world where higher percentages of people enjoy remarkably long, full lives.   We turned to Chelsea residents who have created their own unique formula for living long, happy lives. Silver Maples resident Hank Karner, age 96, is an example of an active lifestyle that has kept him healthy and happy through the years. Hank has worked as a commercial pilot and became a ski patrolman after retirement. "I never hated to go to work a day in my life," says Hank.     Hank has lived at Silver Maples for 10 years and still enjoys daily exercise and outdoor activity. Hank works closely with Shawn Personke, Director of Activities and Public Relations at Silver Maples, on many projects and was instrumental in Silver Maples' walking path development. Hank heads up Wii bowling and is involved in many events including Happy Hour, the Harvest Art Market and Rummage Sale.      As illustrated in The Blue Zones, Hank makes it a priority to put family first. He enjoys staying in touch with his nephews and every year heads up a picnic for 40 at his daughter's home on Cavanaugh Lake. Hank's story is inspiring and his lifestyle has mirrored many of the centenarians interviewed in The Blue Zones.   Read Hank's full article here.     Purple Rose Theatre Company Concert Reading        Purple Rose actors will read   33 Variations by Moises Kaufman.   The plot moves between Ludwig van Beethoven composing his Diabelli Variations while gradually going deaf and a present-day musicologist studying that piece of music and battling ALS.
