She is also the author of a book of creative nonfiction, Daily Bread: A Portrait of Homeless Men & Women of Lenawee County, Michigan based on her experiences reporting on local homelessness for the Adrian, Michigan, Daily Telegram. Burd received her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Washington, and currently works as an editor and writer for the HighScope Educational Research Foundation in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Jennifer will read new poems as well selections from Body and Echo, which addresses hunger and body image, among other themes. Laszlo will provide improvised accompaniment on guitar and folk flutes to the reading of some of the poems, and he will also sing some of Jennifer's poems that he has set to music. Laszlo Slomovits is one of the twin brothers in Ann Arbor's nationally-known children's folk music duo, Gemini (GeminiChildrensMusic.com) and has given concerts throughout the U.S. A number of his award-winning songs are featured in songbooks music teachers use throughout the country. In addition to his performances, song-writing, and recording for children, Laszlo has also recorded five CDs of the poetry of Rumi and Hafiz, 12th and 13th Century Sufi Mystics, in translations by Coleman Barks and Daniel Ladinsky, which he has set to music (PoetryIntoSong.com). In today's event he will sing selections from a number of these recordings, as well as new original songs. Both artists' books and CDs will be available for purchase at the event.
