Notes from B... This is truly a year of release. I am lanching a new webseries, new book, concert expreience and this all before the Summer. I am really excited for all the women in Detroit who are doing some amazing work and releasing their own projects. I will share with you some of the great work that is coming forth from the D and I am really proud of to be a memeber of this community! Before the women's movement in the 60's, society in general felt that women did not have a history worth knowing. In 1978, Women's Week was born and has since evolved into "Women's History Month" to recognize the contributions of great leaders and pioneers such as Freedom Fighter, Harriet Tubman "Grandma Moses"; Congresswoman, Barbara Jordan; Actress, Sigourney Weaver and Women's Advocate Gloria Steinem. Ber-Henda Williams, Detroit poet/Author and Media Personality Sherina Rodriquez, Detroit poet and teacher for Citywide Poets. Christina Perez, Detroit poet Aryn Smith, high school senior and inspiring poet. Did I mention that Professor Kalimah Johnson a full time-tenure track faculty member in the Social Work Department at Marygrove College. Her mission is to find ways for survivors of sexual assault to integrate social work values in order to find hope and resiliency as well as express themselves and heal from victimization will be in the house? At this event girls 13-18 will be able make their own personalized candle. They will also meet metro area women entrepreneurs who will share how they followed their dreams to live a life of passion. Lunch will be provided and tickets are 15.00 per participant. A portion of the proceeds will go the Power of Girlhood--A mentorship initiative through arts, entrepreneurship and science/technology for metro area girls. She is femolutionary, television and film producer, ambassador for the arts, youth advocate, public speaker and lover of humanity. "The pen is her sword," are the words she lives by. Ber-Henda, Germanic and Greek in origin, her name means "Bear Hearted Protector." Ber-Henda Williams is the founder of Poetry, Pages, and Scribes, a monthly poetry series at the Southfield Public Library. She has featured at the Dalley in the Alley, Detroit Festival of the Arts and has hosted many metro area cultural events. Fluent in Spanish, she writes poems in the language that has added a richness and passion to her work. Ber-Henda is in love with poets such as Fredrico Garcia Lorca, Pablo Neruda, Ursula Rucker, Prince, Saul Williams, Nikki Giovanni, and Johnny "Jy Obedele" Jenkins. Williams lives her life in color. She is a lover of all things arts and culture and she is often referred to as an "old soul," as she often listens to music from earlier time. Ber-Henda is heavily influenced by the infancy of soul music. She not only blesses the mic but the spirit of the listener.
