"Surf Detroit" Showing at the CCFF |
Some new touches - new people, new equipment, new approaches - have been swirling through the world of independent movies, and audiences will get a taste for all of these at this year's Capital City Film Fest, running this weekend. A film industry showcase for independent artists, the festival celebrates and promotes filmmakers with an emphasis on Michigan-made talent. CCFF exposes attendees to engaging films, conversations, documentaries, and musical entertainment in a four-day
festival taking place in venues
across Lansing.
Just a sampling of the films being offered this year include:
- Four local documentaries: two are serious - dealing with the 1927 bombing of the Bath school and with warm relations between gays and straights in the Saugatuck area. The other two - "Elderly Instruments" and "Boogie Stomp" - ripple with zesty music.
- Short films: the quietly moving "Surf Detroit", or a few films that reflect the generation of YouTube, Funny or Die and quick-form wit.
- Feature films: mostly serious, said Dan Hartley, the festival program director. "It's a lot easier to make a good drama than a good comedy." Features include "Teddy Bear," an "incredibly charming" Danish film about a bodybuilder, or Oscar-winners Adrien Brody and Marcia Gay Harden in "Detachment" and to Oscar-winner Tilda Swinton in "We Need to Talk About Kevin."
These are all part of an upbeat festival that starts with a movie about music, ends each night with live music and sprinkles in several fun films. Find the complete line-up of films

This year, CCFF is also teaming up with TEDxLansing for a day of ideas worth spreading. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED- like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. Tickets for TEDxLansing are on sale now. Entrance to TEDxLansing is also included in a full festival pass.
The mission of the Greater Lansing Festival Alliance is to facilitate, promote and support Greater Lansing non-profit cultural and artistic festivals in order to positively impact and enhance quality of life in the capital region.
