DIA Inside/Out In Depth @ the Southfield Public Library

The Southfield Public Library is pleased to announce that the Detroit Institute of Arts has brought seven reproductions of its most famous masterpieces from its collection to the streets of Southfield, pleasantly surprising and delighting residents from April through June, 2012.

The Library will host three programs in conjunction with the DIA Inside/Out:

On Thursday, April 19th, we will have our first Inside/Out Walking Tour, with a docent from the Detroit Institute of Arts leading a walking tour of the five Inside/Out artworks located on Southfield's Civic Center Complex. The event will be held rain or shine and will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Library Meeting Room. The tour will then move to a viewing of the reproduction located at the Library, Portrait of a Collagist, by Benny Andrews.

On Saturday, May 5th, we will have another an Inside/Out Walking Tour, with a docent from the Detroit Institute of Arts leading a walking tour of the five Inside/Out artworks located on Southfield's Civic Center Complex. The event will be held rain or shine and will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the Library Meeting Room.  The tour will then move to a viewing of the reproduction located at the Library, Portrait of a Collagist, by Benny Andrews.

Finally, on Tuesday, May 15, our ongoing discussion and celebration of the works placed in Southfield will conclude with an in-depth discussion of all the works led by DIA staff.  This evening event will take place at 7 p.m. in the Library Meeting Room.

In addition, residents of Southfield will receive free museum admission on June 3rd.

Sponsored by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, 2012 is the third year of the DIA's installation of Inside/Out, where they bring framed reproductions to the main streets and landmark outdoor spaces in Southeast Michigan.

Visit www.dia.org for further information and a complete listing of programs celebrating Southfield's participation in DIA Inside/Out.

The reproduction located at the Southfield Public Library is Portrait of a Collagist , by American artist, Benny Andrews.

Benny Andrews ( 1930-2006) shows himself with a brush and palette of paint. Typical artist's self-portrait, right? Actually, Andrews calls himself a collagist, someone who assembles magazine clippings, fabrics — just about anything — into a new work of art. This self-portrait is full of surprises, like pieces of real cargo pants and shoelaces. Find all the unusual materials in the real work of art. . .at your DIA.

Southfield Public Library is located in the Southfield Municipal Complex, 26300 Evergreen Road.  Visit the Library's Home Page at www.southfieldlibrary.org.
