From the Director:
Endless Summer Possibilities

What are your summer plans? Vacation or staycation? It's easier than ever to take the library with you, whether it's to a local park or on a faraway trip. Kent District Library has books and eBooks available for your reading pleasure.

From bestsellers to obscure fiction and nonfiction titles, KDL houses one of the largest collections of books in the state. This, along with the shared resources of the Lakeland Library cooperative that circulates more than 3.7 million items among 41 member library systems, provides you access to a wealth of book titles, both at our 18 branches and online.

And if it's music you're after, consider borrowing from our branches' collections of compact discs in a multitude of genres or checking out our Freegal service, which offers thousands of DRM-free MP3 music files to download and keep.

Hoping to find something new? How about a personalized list of book recommendations based on your interestsFill out a short form on our Personalized Picks page about your reading preferences and expert KDL staff members will email you a list of titles they think you will enjoy.

Whether you're a reader, a movie buff or a gamer, KDL has something for you!

   Dream Big: Read
Summer Reading @ KDL
Fill your summer days and nights with great reads and big dreams, and sign up at any branch starting on June 1 for Summer Reading @ KDL. With programs for infants, children, teens and adults, the whole family can get in on the fun. Reading books and winning prizes... it's a dream come true!

Summer Reading @ KDL will run from June 1 - August 31 and will contain a fun new badge component for kids, where they will be challenged to learn not only through reading, but also through seeing, doing and going. It's a great way for kids to keep their minds sharp and active during those long summer months away from school.

Read Off Your Fines Week
Pull up a chair at any KDL branch

Has your love of books and other KDL materials made it difficult to let go of some of your checked-out items by their due date? Put that love to work for you the week of May 7-13: KDL cardholders are invited to visit a branch, and for every 10 minutes spent reading or listening in the library, $1 in overdue fines will be waived up to a maximum of $10 (does not apply to lost or damaged items or collection fees). For all ages.

** Note: KDL cardholders only. Patrons must do their reading at a KDL branch to have overdue fines waived. Does not apply to lost or damaged items or collection fees.**

KDL Online Databases

As a KDL patron you have full access to a variety of online databases including auto repair, children's learning tools, college and career topics, health, foreign language tutorials, law, magazines and more. Think of it as a super-powered, super-focused search engine aimed at helping you find the most relevant, useful information you need.

Bailey Katsumata-Smith used to think reading was -- in her words -- an overrated waste of time. "That all changed when I turned 6," she said.

The eighth-grader now blogs about what she's reading, recommends books to her friends and is spotted a couple times a week in the teen section at the East Grand Rapids branch.

Read Bailey's story here.

Ready For The Reaping
A Cascade Township branch patron takes part in a recent Hunger Games exercise, held at three KDL branches. See our Summer Kaleidoscope, available next month at all our branches, for more Hunger Games-themed activities, or place a hold on the eAudiobook version of the series.
